Hi. I have this problem where certain keystrokes will open help files (in the form of helpctr.exe or my internet browser) of the program running. This doesn't show up in the Task Manager. Upon trying to close the helpfile, more instances of the helpfile process are run (which show up in Task Manager, but not in windows), eating up the memory.

The keystrokes I've found to trigger off the opening of the helpfile are as follows:
L Shift, L Ctrl, 5, 6, -, =, `, F2, F8, F9.

The only way so far, seems to be to alt tab away from the helpfile, and close it.

I've tried antivirus programs, anti-spyware programs, and reinstalling windows, but none of them work. I'm pretty much stumped.

Here is the logfile:

Hello,

Right now, you have HijackThis on your Desktop. It needs to be in its own folder so that any backup copies it makes will be kept together and not scattered about your Desktop. Please right click on a blank space on your Desktop, select “New” then “Folder.” Name the new folder something like HJT or HijackThis. Now, you can just use "cut" and "paste" to move HijackThis.exe into the new folder.

Please print a copy of these instructions because you will be working in Safe Mode and/or with all windows closed except HijackThis.

Please run HijackThis in Safe Mode….

Reboot into safe mode, this way:
Restart the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the ”Show Hidden Files and Folders” option:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Place a check mark next to the following items then, WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, select “fix checked.”

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Now, search for, and delete if found, (some files may not be present after previous steps) the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\SearchBar.htm

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

C:\Temp\

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select "delete all offline content."

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Reboot into normal mode.

If you are not running version 1.3 of Spybot S & D, click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3 - install, update, reboot into Safe Mode, scan and fix all RED checked items it finds. Reboot into normal mode when done.

Perform a custom Ad-aware scan in Safe Mode……..

If you do not have the latest version of Ad-aware SE Personal, Build 1.05, click here to download Ad-Aware and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Then boot into Safe Mode, start the program, and click the gear wheel at the top and check these options to configure Ad-aware for a customized scan:

Under "General Settings" all available options should be selected.

Click the "Scanning" button.
Under "Drives, Folders and Files," select "Scan within Archives".
Click "Drives and folders to scan" and select your installed hard drives.
Under "Memory & Registry," select all options.

Click the "Advanced" button.
Under "Logfile detail level," select all options.

Click the "Defaults" button.
Under "Default IE Pages" set the "Default homepage" and "Default search page" to what you want them to be; otherwise, Ad-aware will reset them. Do not select the option to "Read current settings from system"… manually fill in the desired web address for each. (For instance, if you want Google as your search page, fill in www.google.com in the "Default search page" field).

Click the "Tweak" button.
Under "Scanning Engine," select the following:
"Unload recognized processes during scanning."
Under "Cleaning Engine," select the following:
"Always try to unload modules before deletion."
"During removal unload Explorer and IE if necessary."
"Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."
Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.

Run the Ad-Aware scan, making sure that the mode selected is "Full Scan."

When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next." The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?" Reboot into normal mode when finished.

Next, perform online virus and Trojan scans, using the links in my signature below. Allow the programs to delete all that they may find. Reboot after each scan.

Proceed to the Windows Update site (see link below) download and install ALL critical updates.

Reboot when finished.

Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log into this same thread.
Hello,

You're very welcome, and I'm glad to hear your problem is resolved. :)

I do hope you followed the posted instructions for cleaning up your system, as that really should be done.

When finished, it would be a good time to flush out your system restore points and establish a new clean one….

Turn off System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot.

Turn ON System Restore.

Right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Set a new system restore point.

Download IE-SPYAD here: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

It will place over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so that you don't accidentally visit innocent appearing sites that aren't really innocent.

Scan often with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware to remove malware before it gains a foothold on your computer. (Links below). Install SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard to keep baddies from invading your system.

Make sure you keep your system updated by frequent visits to the Windows Update site. Always install ALL critical updates.

Please take a minute or two to read the short article, "How did I get infected in the first place?" (See link in my signature below). You will find good information on keeping your system clean in the future, as well as links for excellent free anti-spyware tools.
