Here's my log…
Everything in startup is enabled (much as I hated to to) and log is from a fresh boot, saved in root directory (HJT). Spybot, AdAware SE, Spydoctor-all to no avail. CPU at 100%, about 500 bytes RAM availble (total avail 256), files from the prefetch folder keep popping into my processes and sucking up about 150K or more?
I'm afraid I will need professional mental help soon!

Thanks in advance.

How to show hidden files and folders in Windows Instructions here

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip
Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"

Go here and run online scans (all), allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Well, that was an task! (with 5-6 minutes between clicks and keystrokes this get boring)

I followed your instructions, here are things I noticed along the way.

1. Did I make a mistake purchasing Spyware Doctor 2 days ago? ($40)
2. Nothing changed until I ran TrendMicro Housecall - after that things were pretty much back to speed, CPU % low and avail RAM 150K out of 256)
3. eTrust Scanner found 5 bad things, 4 files called TROJ VRTUMONDE.A and 1 called TROJ DELF.AR, all noted "uncleanable", but was able to delete them.
4. To my horror, after rebooting to run HJT again, the reboot brought back my appearent problem, avail RAM down to 1300 etc…oddly though, CPU usuage was pulsing between 5% and 100%, very consistent sine wave pattern. Computer was again practically unusable.
5. I did notice a file in processes (and I have noticed this before) called srvwin.exe that will build to about 180,000 sometimes, with about 60-80 CPU…once I end task that application, things return to normal speed. I almost immediately return to the task field and starts increasing in size again. You can watch the PF usage run from 125MB to over 900 in a matter or minutes SOMETIMES-other times I dont even see the application running.

Currently…after a fresh reboot…and after letting the computer sit idle for about an hour, it seems to be 'almost' normal…seems to hesitate and stop every so often, but then returns.

Here is the current HJT log…..let em know where I stand…'cause I feel like I'm sinking!

Thanks for your time and effort.

Don

Well, its not doing any better. It seems to have good and bad moments.
I will post a fresh log at the end of this.

Here's some things I have noticed.
When things are 'bad' I have noticed several app's that seem to be hogging up all the CPU time.
unsvc.exe
dbbas.exe
svrwin.exe

Any of these 3 seem to intermittantly claim control of everything. When things get slow, i can almost always find one of these 3 at about +100,000K with about 50-90 under the CPU column. At this point, the computer is usually useless. If I 'end process tree' on the offending prog. the computer will 'come back' and resume normal operation- but only momentarily, maybe 1-2 minutes. The offending prog. will return almost immediately, and start sucking up the CPU again…again and again.
I have run ad aware se numerous times, including spy-bot, no avail.

Here is a fresh log…

(FYI- this log was gathered with dbbas, svrwin, and a new one, CRKB.exe running (and IE) - and I am barely able to type its so slow.)

As a side note, when I tried to run HJT I got a Virtual Memory too low error-but it looks like it still worked ok.

Awaiting your appreciated and needed advice.

Don
OK, this is it for me…I seem to have gotten it to be consistently 'better'

Here's what I did.

I traced the tree for unsvc.exe, dbbas.exe, and svrwin.exe back to the windows Prefetch folder. I think I have a basic understanding of prefetch.

I went to MajorGeeks forums and downloaded some type of Prefetch control and limiter program Windows XP Prefetch Clean And Control 1.2.0.
Once downloaded, I disabled XP's prefetch feature. Then I went and purged the contents of the folder.
Now, on boot up, those files still auto load themselves and start accumulating size, BUT, now when I 'end process tree', they stay gone!

And…knock on my wooden desk (not too hard because its that Sauder brand Walmart crap)…things seems to be up to speed.

Specs: Avail RAM 151K out of 262K, PF usage at about 124MB (down ffrom 1000)

I have no doubts that something is still semi-horribly wrong, but I am able to work with my computer now.

Please, if anyone has some advice for me now, I'm all ears.

thanks-
Don
Make a resore point then,

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {55E301E5-BA44-4095-BB0B-14E0123CCF71} - C:\DOCUME~1\DONKER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\cvsnu.dat

The following have randomly named file names, and as such are normally malware.
UNLESS you know what they are, and they are from a safe source, follow their process tree.
Right click on the file and go to Properties. Then go to the Version tab to see what company name it's from:
If it's from some name you never heard of or if it's blank, please check for removal also.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*svcas] C:\WINDOWS\system\RESTORE\svcas.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*vbnet] C:\WINDOWS\inf\vbnet.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MS Setup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098638566

Reboot afterwards in SAFE MODE. If you don't know how click here
Delete the following file(s) and folder(s) listed

C:\WINDOWS\system\RESTORE\svcas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inf\vbnet.exe
C:\WINDOWS\addins\crkb.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\adap.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\svrwin.exe

C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\playwave.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Web\dbbas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Cursors\mfcmc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\unsvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\unsvc.exe rerun
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098638566

(do a search for this one. It'll probably be in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32.)

Some of these files and folders might have the hidden atribute
How to show hidden files and folders in Windows Instructions here

Then Download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip
Under "items to clear" click all. Then click "clear selected items"

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Ok, here's where I stand.

Current computer is still slow and hesitating about 45-60 seconds between clicks.

Here are the problems I encounter with your instructions:

This line would not 'fix' in HJT, it would act like it did, but on a rescan, the line was still there:
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MS Setup] C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098838806

I was able to delete the file from safe mode, but on reboot, the file reappeared? Same local and name - shoudl I just try the whole procedure again?

On reboot, all the other malware randomly named files were gone. But, I noticed a new one-at least I think its one. The application is Ipdos.exe. The version is blank, nothing in google about it. So I got brave and tried to 'fix' it in HJT. Same deal, it would not 'fix' that line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*ipdos] C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files\ipdos.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*ipdos] C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files\ipdos.exe rerun

I ran HJT in safe mode and tried it, would not fix. I tried deleting it in safe mode, says it cant because its running, obviously. I tried ending the process, it wont even disappear for a split second! The program is running at 90-120,000 and it says 75-80 under the CPU heading, CPU is at 100% most of the time.

Looks like this one item is the last thing holding me up?

BYT - I dowloading and installed http://www.igorshpak.net/software/3ssetup104.zip (which I had previsouly done at your request in the past) but, this time when I ran it, it immediatly said, "In order to finish cleaning your computer Windows must restart" So I let it restart, but nithing ever told me it had done any cleaning?
With that in mind, I emptied the recycl. bin, purge temp internet files, and did a Disk Cleanup - hope that was good enough?

As before, thanks for your time and valuable help

Don

Start HijackThis click >Config…> Misc tools > Delete a file on reboot…Then navigate to

C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files\ipdos.exe

Then click yes Reboot and see if it's still there.

Then do the same for C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098838806

Close all Browser and Program Windows and have HijackThis fix the following.
Do this by checking the box beside each and then clicking on Fix checked.

O1 - Hosts: fferoptimizer.com
O1 - Hosts: P\[DK_W^KT]\.com
O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {55E301E5-BA44-4095-BB0B-14E0123CCF71} - C:\DOCUME~1\DONKER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sodpi.dat
Ok, Here's where I am now.

Current computer condition: Still hesitating during typing and mouse clicking badly.
I followed your instructions. Both
C:\WINDOWS\System32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098838806
and
C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files\ipdos.exe
were deleted using the 'Delete on Reboot' in HJT.

However, on the next reboot, bkinst.exe is recreated (time stamp on properties menu was 7:45, reboot came up at 7:44)

The other app. (ipdos.exe) did not return. BUT, something called hardinfo.exe seems to have filled its spot (see below). Google says this is some type of prog that gathers info? So I left it alone. Problem is, it acts just like the ipdos.exe prog…using +40K of RAM, and every 6 seconds it pulses hard and registers a 80-90 in the CPU usage column. I assume this is what is giving me my intermittant hesitation in response every 5-10 seconds?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*hardinfo] C:\WINDOWS\Web\hardinfo.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*hardinfo] C:\WINDOWS\Web\hardinfo.exe rerun

Also, I still can't seem to get this line to 'fix', it also recreates on reboot - in fact, sometimes if you run HJT a few times, it will come back that way:

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MS Setup] C:\WINDOWS\system32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098921664

One final note, the lines:
O1 - Hosts: fferoptimizer.com
O1 - Hosts: P\[DK_W^KT]\.com
O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {55E301E5-BA44-4095-BB0B-14E0123CCF71} - C:\DOCUME~1\DONKER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sodpi.dat

You asked me to fix/delete these lines. I ran HJT but they were already gone, but there was a new line:

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {55E301E5-BA44-4095-BB0B-14E0123CCF71} - C:\DOCUME~1\DONKER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ofnidrah.dat

It looked so similar to the BHO you asked about, that I went ahead and 'tried' to fix/delete it. It didn't work. It reappeared on the next run of HJT, as you will see.

I hope you're not getting sick of me yet.
I appreciate your help.

Don

(hopefully I can get this resolved before my wife divorces me over this!)

You have a "Stopguard" infection. Please do not reboot until told to do so. Each reboot can make the infection harder to remove.

If you have rebooted since you posted the log, DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS FIX. Instead post another log file.

Download Killbox.zip

Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. In the 'Paste Full Path of File to Delete' box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\DOCUME~1\DONKER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ofnidrah.dat

Don't click any of the buttons though, instead please click on the Action menu and choose "Delete on Reboot". In the window that opens up, click on the File menu and choose "Add File". The file should show up in the window. Then repeat the process, this time adding:

C:\WINDOWS\Web\hardinfo.exe

If that's successful you should have the two files listed. Then repeat so that this file appear in the list as well:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\bkinst.exe

When they are all there (and double check!), in the same window choose the Action menu and select "Process and Reboot". You'll be prompted to reboot, do so.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Scan".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O2 - BHO: CATLEvents Object - {55E301E5-BA44-4095-BB0B-14E0123CCF71} - C:\DOCUME~1\DONKER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ofnidrah.dat
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [*hardinfo] C:\WINDOWS\Web\hardinfo.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*hardinfo] C:\WINDOWS\Web\hardinfo.exe rerun
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [*MS Setup] C:\WINDOWS\system32\bkinst.exe ren time:1098921664

Then click "Fix checked".

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all files in this folder:

c:\documents and settings\owner\local settings\temp <— FOLDER

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
little eagle…you are the Big Eagle in my book.
I think we (you) have made some real progress with my computer.

Things seem normal again. CPU is resting normal again, below 5% and things are up to speed.

I had no trouble with your instructions, everything worked as you stated.

Here is my fresh log. I hope everything looks groovy!
