Hello solley ,welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

After the above:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Wow! Thanks for the help.

Problem appears to be gone, but sometimes it would be fine for a day or so, then show up again, so we'll see.

Here is my new log, if you want to take a look.

Thanks again.

- Solley

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
OK. Explorer.exe still doing the 70 thing after the 1st set of instructions.

Completed the 2nd set.

Below is new file.

Yes, I use Kazaa Lite.

Also, as I'm typing this, the network icon in the tray is indicating that it is acquiring a network address. That is strange to me, since I am obviously on-line…???

I have been having myriad cable internet problems, as well, but I've been blaming this on the ISP….maybe this is all related? I have to unplug my modem to reset it quite often. Sometimes it will go a couple of days with no problems….sometimes I will reset it and it will work for 3 minutes or less.

Thanks again for your help.

Done.

Strange activity:

IE home page being reset to about:blank (not as a function of resetting web settings from above)

I printed your instructions before going to safe mode. While in safe mode, the first page of the instrucitons printed again on its own.

When booting up in regular mode, there is only one choice of user to log in with. In safe mode, there is that same user and "Administrator". I logged in as admin and couldn't access all user files. There are four sets of user files…but only one is an option during normal mode, one plus admin in safe mode, and I couldn't access one of the users in Safe Mode as an Admin.

Here is my new HJT log.

Thanks.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

So far, so good. I have a couple of questions… Do you know how to fix the missing users problems when logging in? Admin isn't even an option in Normal Mode. Also, could any of the things we've done here fix my problems with my cable modem needing to be reset so often? And, lastly, how much is a common donation? I really appreciate your help. - Solley
