I was recently given this computer by a friend who didn't know how to take very good care of it (not that I know what to do in this situation, either). The internet rarely works, it takes about ten minutes to load any pages if I can get them to load at all, and there seems to be something that's hijacked the windows update program…it never properly updates and doesn't even go to a microsoft page in order to do it. So if anyone could help me out, I'd appreciate it immensely.

Hello Jaikob, and welcome to TomCoyote.

Let's start with some automated anti-malware tools.

Download Ad-aware SE v1.05 from LavaSoft. Install, update and configure it as explained in this tutorial. Run Ad-aware and allow it to remove everything it finds.

Download Spybot Search & Destroy v1.3. Install, update and configure it as expained in this tutorial. Run Spybot and allow it to remove everything it finds.

Together, Ad-aware and Spybot provide a one-two punch that will remove much of the malware that is infecting your machine.

Please do an online virus scan at two or more of the following sites:
TrendMicro Housecall
Panda ActiveScan
Symantec Security Check
CA eTrust AV WebScanner

Allow the online scan to remove anything it finds. Report anything that it can not remove.

You have HijackThis running from a temporary or zip folder. Any backup files HJT creates during the repair process will not be secure if left in this folder.

Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Unzip HijackThis into this folder. Please delete any other copies of HijackThis and run HJT only from this new folder. If required a tutorial is here: Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

After running the automated tools, online virus scans, and moving HijackThis to a permanent folder, rescan and post a new HJT log.
Closing due to lack of responce form victim.
