Hi mickey6148,

There is a new variant from eXact Advertising, but I don't see any signs of it running on your system.

Please go to your Add/Remove Programs,
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs "Change or Remove Programs"
and Remove these (if there):

BargainBuddy
CashBack
Bullseye
NaviSearch
SmartPops or Network Essentials

Then close Control Panel.

Now, open Hijackthis, click Scan, then put a check next to the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us9.hpwis.com/

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00041A26-7033-432C-94C7-6371DE343822} - (no file)

Now Close all open Windows and browsers (have only HJT open) and click "Fix Checked".

Then browse to the C:\documents and settings\ (repeat for all users)\local settings\temp folder and delete all files and folders in it.

Then browse to the C:\Windows\Temp folder and delete all files in it.
This will delete all your cached internet content including cookies.

In internet explorer, click tools>internet Options>General. Click on Delete Files make sure you get all offline content as well.

Then Reboot.

Please post a new HJT log after you reboot, and let us know how you made out.
TO AUTODAD

Followed your directions point by point. Then performed reboot and ran AdAware SE. BargainBuddy and friends back again!!!!

Ran HJT again. Log file below. One note, the previous HJT logfile may have been taken after running AdAware and deleting files. This HJT log was taken before AdAware deleted files.

Appreciate your help,

mickey6148

Hi mickey6148,

I do see the eXact Advertising entries showing now, so you probably have the new variant.
Let's do this:

First, go to Start > Run > Services.msc

Look for a service called ISEXEng

If ISEXEng is there, continue with these steps. If it isn't please post back and tell us!
_ _ _ _ _

It might help to print this out to follow along.

1. First, make sure your Ad-aware SE is up to date, but Don't run it yet.
This fix needs to be performed on an infected log.

2. Next, open Notepad, copy and paste the below and "Save As" remove.reg
In the "Save as type" select: All files

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ISEXENG]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\ISEXEng]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ISEXENG]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\ISEXEng]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ISEXENG]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ISEXEng]

3. Click Start | Run (type) Services.msc

Scroll down to the ISEXEng service
Highlight, right-click and select: Properties
Select "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" set it to "Disabled", click Apply, OK
Close the Services Editor.

4. Close all open programs and browsers, rescan with HijackThis
Place a check in each of the following then click "Fix checked".

O2 - BHO: NLS UrlCatcher Class - {AEECBFDA-12FA-4881-BDCE-8C3E1CE4B344} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvms.dll
O2 - BHO: CB UrlCatcher Class - {CE188402-6EE7-4022-8868-AB25173A3E14} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mscb.dll
O2 - BHO: ADP UrlCatcher Class - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msbe.dll

5. Then reboot, on restart, restart in Safe mode (tap F8 while restarting)

6. Locate remove.reg right-click and select: Merge (ok the prompt).

7. Click Start | Run (type) "%temp%" (no quotes) [required step]
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

Open Windows Explorer to your Windows\Temp folder [required step]
Completely delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder.

8. Open Windows Explorer locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvms.dll <–this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mscb.dll <–this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msbe.dll <–this file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\angelex.exe <–this file

C:\Program Files\NaviSearch<–this Folder
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\<–this Folder

9. While still in Safe Mode, run Ad-Aware SE and fix everything it finds.

10. After the above, reboot, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log …
TO Audad:

ISEXEng was present… "Service Status" was already stopped but no options accessable. "Startup type" set to disable from auto….
Only one "BHO" on your list present on HJT scan…. checked & fixed….

Windows XP home edition would not boot in "SafeMode"…. Normal mode fine… Safe Mode no can do….. tried 12 times…. tapped F8 once, held F8, tapped multiple times….. have no clue…

Proceeded with remainder of instructions in normal mode…. Merged remove.reg…. deleted contents ofboth temp folders….. Deleted angelex.exe(the only one of the system32\files present)…. Deleted NaviSearch folder, BullsEye folder not present this time….. Ran Adaware & removed 84 critical items….

Rebooted did HJT scan, log below…. ran Adaware removed 13 critical items, all Volume system information recover entries…

I'm puzzled by the inability to start in safe mode… ANy ideas? Is there an alternative command to initiate Safe Mode?

Thanks,

Mickey6148

Hi mickey6148,

You're welcome.

I'm slightly puzzled myself. From my post, step one:

1. First, make sure your Ad-aware SE is up to date, but Don't run it yet.
This fix needs to be performed on an infected log.

The last log you posted was infected with all 3 entries:
O2 - BHO: NLS UrlCatcher Class - {AEECBFDA-12FA-4881-BDCE-8C3E1CE4B344} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvms.dll
O2 - BHO: CB UrlCatcher Class - {CE188402-6EE7-4022-8868-AB25173A3E14} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mscb.dll
O2 - BHO: ADP UrlCatcher Class - {F4E04583-354E-4076-BE7D-ED6A80FD66DA} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msbe.dll

Did you fix any of the entries or run Ad-aware before following the fix I suggested?

In step 5, I also included a link that shows how to boot to Safe mode (click on the words "Safe mode")
The F8 method usually works, if Windows XP is the only operating system installed on your computer.

Try using the using the System Configuration Utility method. Here is the link:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam

Here's another link Start Windows in Safe mode

Your HJT log looks clean, good job!
Are there any signs of eXact Advertising showing on your system?

Here are some suggestions to clean/protect your PC:

Go to Windows Update to keep up on all the latest security patches that apply to your PC.

Then click Start | Run (type) cleanmgr
Select the following:
1) Temporary Internet Files
2) Recycle Bin
3) Temporary Files

Here is a good link to follow:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

When completed Reboot.

Then I recommend you clean out your System Restore
Doing this will remove all your restore points, and any infections that might be hanging in there.

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives".
Click Apply.
Click Yes to do this.
Click OK.
Then Restart your computer.

After you have restarted, turn System Restore back on:
Click Start.
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here is some free protection you should also consider:
Download and install:

SpywareBlaster will block bad ActiveX and malevolent cookies.

IESPYAD puts over 4000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Check for updates occasionally.

And also see So how did I get infected in the first place?

Stay safe!
