Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Click here to download DllCompare. Start the Program with and click the Run Locate.com - be sure the \Windows\System32 directory is in the box and wait until the the blue text says it has 'completed the scan'.

Click the Compare button to start the next process. The results appear in two panes - files in the upper pane have been verified to 'exist', files in the lower pane were 'not able to be accessed'. Very few files should be listed in the lower pane when the Compare scan is complete. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower pane to select them. Right-click on the file and use the option Rescan. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then if so it will be removed from the list to reduce the number of identified files.

Click the Make a Log of what was found button and post the log here in this thread and wait for further instructions.
Thank you for your reply and taking the time to help me. I have done as you have asked and found there are no files in the lower pane. Do I still need to "make a log of what was found"? or is it a problem that there were no files there? The higher pane has loads of entries.
Yes, please make the log and post it.

I sounds as if this infection is the "easiest" of this type to remove.

If no files are in the lower pane, this is a very good thing.
:)
Oh that is good I hope it is an easy one!

the only thing I noticed is that where is says "scan options" the box next to runlocate.com says C:\WINDOWS\System32 The box next to it says *.dll there is a drop down box which gives you a few options, I will list these: *.* and *.exe Does this make a difference or will I need to change this and do it again? …..also did I need to check include subdirectories …because I didn't.

here is the log file:

* DLLCompare Log version()
Files Found that Windows does not See or cannot Access
*Not everything listed here means you are infected!

Looks to me like you successfully terminated all the malware! So… How are things working? There is one "optional" fix to consider. Go to: Start > Control Panel > Add/remove programs, and remove: "MyWebSearch", then reboot.
First of all I want to thank you for helping me! Things seem to be going ok thank you……hopefully! I will fix the option you advised as that is a problem sometimes! I have one more question, what firewall do you think would be the best to use? (free one possibly!) I used to use sygate but it blocked my port so I had to get rid of it. I tries downloading that again and it didn't work, I do have norton but it is still the free version that probably doesn't work so good as I didn't pay for an update. ;)
I see a lot of people using Zone Alarm.

I use Norton Anti-virus and Internet Security.

I am glad we could help you get your PC back under your control.

GOD bless!!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally, I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)

Thank you, I did download Zonealarm, but it won't let me into the internet and I don't know why! (I must sound so lame!!) I have disabled it and am using the norton one to get on at the moment and am hoping that perhaps you could advise me why I am having a problem. Also how to identify the programs that should be allowed or denied?
Configuring Zone Alarm

If your computer is free a malware (which it was last time we checked), then all of the programs would be "safe" to allow. Although you may want to stop some, just for the sake of privacy.

My own approach is to NOT let any program access the Internet unless necessary.

The "necessary" programs would be most of the Windows utilities.

The "optional" programs would be software you've installed.

I hope this has helped. :)
Yes this has been very helpful thank you very much, I feel a lot more confident that I can protect my computer properly now! I understand a bit more about the security! I will not let progeams that I don't recognise through! but I didn't recognise wanadoo trying to get through and I think I must have blocked it!!! But I think I shall learn! If I switched to broadband would the security settings stay the same or would I have to adjust them? Also do you think broadband is any good? …sorry to keep on!!
