Hello weakvsfire,
That red.clientapps sure is stubborn. I am going to give you specific directions for editing that entry out of the registry and it should be gone. You do have indications that you have a virus on your PC.

First I will have you make some changes with both HijackThis and Spybot SD. During the time that you are doing these fixes, please keep IE closed and disconnect from the internet as well

Step#1

1. Open HijackThis and click on the button in the right bottom corner called config.

2. In the new HijackThis window you will see boxes for four URL's - your start and search pages. In each box enter the URL that you want for each item. For Example if you want google for your search page enter http://www.google.com in the box. The same for your Home Start page, enter the URL of the page you want to start with in IE.

3. Click back in the bottom right hand corner of the HijackThis window.

4. Close HijackThis

Step#2

1. Open Spybot SD

2. In the top menu choose mode and then put a check mark beside Advanced

3. A series of links will appear on the left hand side of your Spybot SD window

4. Click on Tools and open the sliding window on the left side of Spybot SD and then Click on Browser Pages

5. In the Right Hand window in Spybot SD will be the URL's for the start and search pages that IE uses. Find the entry that says http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com if it is there.

6. Highlight the entry http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com and click on the arrow at the top left of the right hand window marked change.

7. A small prompt will come up with a selection of URL's to put in that space. Choose the one you would like in that space and click OK

8. Close Spybot SD

9. Restart your computer.

(if this does not work I will have you download another program to edit the registry to remove the entry)

Step#3

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside the following entry in the HJT window

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

3. Click 'fix checked

4. REBOOT

Step#4

It appears that you have a virus and/or trojan and to remove them you need an Online AV scan which you should allow to scan and fix all that is found. Please report back what is found in the AV scans and choose at least two from the list to use:

Panda AV Online Scan

Housecall Trend Micro AV Scan

Bitdefender AV scan

eTrust AV web scanner(Computer Associates)

Step#5

1. please SCAN again with HJT and

2. POST a new log file here in this thread using 'Add Reply' to see what is left to clean.

Good Luck!

I do believe you have excercised the demon
wonderful - Looks great but is it behaving itself? I truly hope so!

Only one thing that could be a problem. You disabled some startup entries in msconfig and they need to be re-enabled.

Please go to Start>Run and Type msconfig in the run box. WHen the system configuration utility opens, make sure there is a check mark next to all entries. Then Restart your computer.

Please scan one last time with HijackThis and post a last log file to make sure it has stayed clean. If those entries are not re-enabled the infection will still be hiding on your PC but will not show in the log so we won't be able to kill it.

I will then have a few recommendations to keep yourself clean besides the ones you have implemented already

Cheers!

Hello weakvsfire,

Looks great! Congratulations! I will have you run HijackThis one last time to remove the entry for msconfig as it is no longer needed.

Then I have a few things to recommend that you do to make sure all areas of your computer are clean of infected files.

Step#1

I would advise you to run a couple of Online AV scans as you may have a trojan still left on your PC. Here is a list of the good Online AV scanners from which you can use.

Panda AV Online Scan

Housecall Trend Micro AV Scan

Bitdefender AV scan

eTrust AV web scanner(Computer Associates)

Step#2

1. Scan again with HijackThis (ALL WINDOWS CLOSED EXCEPT HJT)

2. Put a check mark beside the following entry in the HJT window

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfigReminder] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msconfig.exe /reminder

3. Click 'fix checked

4. REBOOT to finish removing the entry.

Step#3

One thing you should do is clean out System Restore because other programs are unable to clean any files there. All Restore Points will be lost when you do this but they are probably infected anyway.

1. Right-click My Computer and then click Properties.
2. On the Performance tab, click File System
3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select Disable System Restore
4. Click OK twice
5. Restart your computer.

6. Right-click My Computer and again click Properties
7. On the Performance tab, click File System
8. Clear the check mark in Disable System Restore check box.
9. System Restore is now be active again.

Step#4

1. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

2. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

3. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\your account\Temporary Internet Files
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp\ folder

4. Empty your Recycle Bin

5. I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of this post, for information on how to secure your PC from spyware/adware/malware.There are several small free programs mentioned there that help with securing your PC against this type of problem.

Good Luck!
