Hi:

Sorry if this is a repeat but I am a newbie on HijackThis and am afraid of messing up my laptop. I have the begin2search program which others have described -> highlighted text in IE pages (spam, email, etc), occasional application starts (myhoroscope), and webpage popunders.

I am running WinXP and here is the output from HiJackThis v1.98.2. Thanks in advance for any suggestions and solutions!

Welcome to the forum. :D

Please do the following,

You have one (or more) of these programs running on your machine and that is good.

Winpatrol
Spywareguard
Spybot s&d (Teatimer option)

But prior to doing the fix below with hijackthis they need to be turned off.
Please do the following.

Right click the running icon of spybot's teatimer, and choose exit.
Right click the running icon of winpatrol, and choose exit.
Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program, Menu, file, exit, and confirm the programs close.

Unless they are turned off they could interfer with the fix by hijackthis.

Step #1

You have a peper infection that we need to remove

When you run the uninstaller, you MUST have an internet connection active for it to work

This Peper removal tool only works if run twice. To complete each stage of the Peper removal you need to REBOOT to clear the peper infection each time you run the tool, or the infection will remain.

Step # 2

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

Please download and run Spybot Search & Destroy and AdAware SE . Then follow the instructions in the links below to run.

Step # 4

Then do a virus scan here >>> Micro World http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/free_utilities.asp

To run the virus scan make sure you click the following

memory, registry, startup folders, system folders, services, drive (all drives will be added) then click on scan clean.


Reboot and post a new HiJackThis log. Some additional cleaning will still be needed.

Scan again with hijackthis and put a check beside these lines and then choose FIX.

Open notepad, and copy and paste the contents of the quote box below into a new text file.

Save it as file name: "fixme.reg" (not including the quotes). Save as file type: *All files* and save it on your Desktop.

Then, locate fixme.reg on your desktop and double-click it.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.
