God, I was lucky to find this site. I used the latest version of Hijack This, and completed the log which is below, and hope that one of your learned members can help me through this conundrum.

I cannot access the internet through my computer these days, and I cannot get Symantec's Internet Security to load properly, either.

If it's time for a can of lighter fluid and a match, lemme know.

Otherwise….

Help.

God Bless you Good Samaritans on the Virtual Road.

Don

Question…. How much hair do you have to pull out before you are bald?

Because…I'm getting there.

Went and downloaded LSPFix, ran that, it deleted one file in Winsock2.
Didn't help.

Ran HijackThis again, and below is the current log.

Thanks for your help!

Little Eagle… I did not mention this in the previous post, but after I ran the Security Suite, which from every indication was installed properly, but the Security Suite program said that I had not closed it properly, and that all temporary files might not be deleted. Don't know if that little tidbit helps….still cannot access the internet on my home pc. Don (aka Pipefitter)

Went and downloaded LSPFix, ran that, it deleted one file in Winsock2.
Didn't help.

Any idea which one you deleted?
That would cause you to lose your internet.
Who told you to do that?
Little Eagle…. Here's what LSPFix said that the program did…. "LSP-Fix is a free utility to repair a specific type of problem associated with certain Internet software. This type of software is known as a Layered Service Provider or LSP, a piece of software that can be inserted into the Windows TCP/IP handler like a link in a chain. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software, this chain can get broken, rendering the user unable to access the Internet. Unfortunately, this type of software is sometimes quietly installed by unrelated software such as file-sharing programs, sneaking onto a system unannounced. In fact, in many cases, the user does not know of its existance until something goes wrong, and he/she can no longer access Web sites. Common offenders include New.net* (NEWDOTNET) and WebHancer*, which are often bundled with file-sharing utilities, DVD player software, and other free downloads. LSP-Fix repairs the Winsock LSP chain by removing the entries left behind when LSP software is removed by hand (or when errors in the software itself break the LSP chain), and removing any gaps in the chain. LSP-Fix is not a malware removal utility and does not target specific products. LSP-Fix does not delete any files." And, nobody told me to do run LSPFix. I'll investigate my rash actions further, and mosey on over to Microsoft and see if I can find the file. Don
Little Eagle… Well, I won't go anywhere you don't tell me to go in the future. Winsock2 is not on my Windows XP file base anymore. I wish I could remember the name of the .dll file, I've been having to write down so much stuff to accomplish fixing this problem, but didn't write it down, as the FixLSP program said that it would not delete any files, only repair them, and they would be replaced upon rebooting the system. Wrong. Sorry to make this an even more troublesome situation. Any link to a site where I could download Winsock2 and replace it in Windows would be most appreciated. Unfortunately for me, the computer guy who sold me this tower did not give me the XP disk. With Great Admiration, Don
Most of the Internet connectivity problems arise out of corrupt Winsock settings. Windows sockets settings may get corrupted due to a networking software installation, spyware or remnants of it. You may notice errors such as "Page cannot be displayed" or similar, in Internet Explorer. You will be able to get connected to the Internet, but the packets won't transfer back and forth. One of the main cause for these problems is the corruption of Winsock settings. In any case, you may use these methods to repair/reset the Windows Sockets settings to defaults.

Hope this helps you. Post another log when done.
Little Eagle….

YAHOO!!!!!

(and every other site I want to visit…now available!!!!)

I reset my internet protocol settings, and am back online.

After four days of hair pulling, scratching my head, and being an amateur at the innard workings of computers, I did it!

But not without your gracious help.

Long Live Little Eagle, and Long Live Tom Coyote.com!

Here's my current HijackThis log as you requested.

With Great Thanks,
Don

Again, thank you…now I won't have to take this computer into a service tech, have them erase the whole hard drive and reinstall Windows XP, thereby losing everything I've done on the computer. That is, 3500 songs.
Log looks clean.

Please read through the ideas and free software listed below that will help to keep your computer clean.
Some of these you may already have installed or may have done already.

Install a firewall.ZoneAlarm FREE

Ensure that an Antivirus is updated weekly and running. AVG antivirus from Grisoft is a very good FREE antivirus program.

Make sure you have the latest critical updates from windows update.

SpywareBlaster will prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.

IE-SPYAD puts over 4000 known 'bad' sites into your IE restricted zone so that they cannot install malware on your PC.

Google toolbar has a very good built in popup blocker with a nice search bar. To provide privacy, select disable advanced features when installing.

Check your system for latest virus definitions with an online virus scan every week or two.
TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Check your system for latest trojan definitions with an Online trojan scan also every week or two.
