Always,
Terri Lynne
ps…. highjack this is in it's own folder though it says it is not.. I also checked for updates said I had the lastest version…….
hello TerriLynne,

is this the same computer we cleaned up before?
its hard to tell in xp if HJT is in its own folder by looking at this:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

ok, on to the log
first look in add/remove programs panel and uninstall if present:
WinTools
MsgPlus or MessengerPlus3
VirtualBouncer
GrimPoll or GRAMIS something

ok next step will be done in safe mode:

Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files

Double click my computers & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Reboot your PC into SAFE MODE
or see link
How to start the computer in Safe mode
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…001052409420406

Scan with HijackThis and place an check next to the following entries, then press *fix checked*

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Documents and Settings\whitneymichelle\My Documents\MsgPlus.exe" /WinStart

ok still in SAFE MODE try to find and delete the above 04 items:

delete entire msgplus folder in
C:\Documents and Settings\whitneymichelle\My Documents\MsgPlus.exe"

boltmodeshim.exe in C:\ porgram files -entire folder

face heart dumb option\dupeflaw.exe in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\

entire folder for each of these:

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\TBPS.exe

C:\Program Files\SED\SED.exe"

C:\PROGRA~1\VBouncer\VirtualBouncer.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe

for this one delete >just< the zwmvhw.exe file running in the
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ dir

clear temps:
Empty Temp folders. Go to Start > Run and type:cleanmgr. Windows will scan. When done check these 3 and press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

ok reboot normally, and if you havent yet-download update and run these 2 apps:
Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.de/
Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

the 010 items may require a another tool to download.,

afterwards post a new HJT log to see whats left ………..
Hi Shelf Life…… No it's not the same computer…… Mine is working GREAT still thinks to YOU!!!…… That log is from my sisters computer…… Do you think maybe I should get rid of HJT and download it again????? because it does say it is NOT in it's own folder. but it is……. yes see if anything like toolbar is listed in the add/remove programs panel and uninstall it,( except for the yahoo toolbar, unless you want to get rid of it also)

next, same drill- boot into safe mode (F8 key at start up) and, make sure files are set to show, then:

Have Hijack This fix all of the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and hitting fix checked. Make sure all browsers and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

also where you able to download and run ad aware and spybot search and destroy?
configure ad aware like this:

click on "Check For Updates Now", download updates.

Next:

- Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweaks > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Press "Scan Now"

- Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
- Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
- Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
- Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives…
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys. Click 'Next' again
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

If it finds "bad" files and registry keys, press "Next" again
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.

and then run spybot search and destroy……..then post a new HJT log
Hello Shelf Life,

I did everything you instructed….. Spybot could not get rid of 2 problems but didn't see what the problems were….. Also could not find:

hello,

ok maybe that calsp.dll is holding us up! lets try this. download LSPfix.exe from: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

doubleclick to launch it, check the i know what iam doing box, then:

Select calsp.dll and using the right-pointing 'arrows' and move all instances of calsp.dll it mentions and nothing else to the Remove side but leave everything else on the keep side (it might already be over there when you open LSPFix). Click the 'Finished' button (if you exit with the X at top right nothing happens).

next run HJT and have it fix these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…ario&pf=desktop

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…ario&pf=desktop

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TYPE=3&t…ario&pf=desktop

ok now reboot into safe mode (F8 at startup)
and try to find and delete-entire folder– it is in C:\Program files…
C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa

then post a new HJT log………..
Hello Shelf Life,
Have done as you instructed..
However could not find this file in safemode:

Thanks for everything,
Always,
Terri Lynne
Now that you are clean, please follow afew steps to help remain that way:

1) Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update occasionaly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Also download, install and keep updated- Antivirus Software:
Free for home users:
http://www.avast.com/eng/free_virus_protectio.html
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/
http://www.free-av.com/

2) Watch what you download, and where you download it from. Many programs come bundled with spyware. Make sure you know what it is you will be downloading and installing. Visit the makers website, learn more about the program, read the privacy policy. Does the program you want come bundled with other programs? Will it deliver ads? Stay away from warez and crack sites. Becarful what you download from file sharing networks.

3)Adjust your browser settings: Change your(active x) settings in IE. With IE open go to tools, internet options, security tab. Click on the internet globe, then custom level. Set the first option "download signed active x controls" to prompt, the next two to disable. Read more: https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/btw/ie/ie-opts.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…y/settings.mspx
Many exploits are directed at Internet Explorer. Try a different browser: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

4)Install a firewall. A firewall will control what comes in from the internet and what leaves your computer to the internet. A firewall will also alert you when a application trys to connect to the internet from your computer, this is a good way to catch spyware or trojans, trying to connect out bound from your computer. Zone Alarm is a free and easy to use firewall, that will provide in and outbound protection. Microsoft XP firewall only provides inbound protection. SP2 adds in and out bound protection which is better than nothing, but is not as robust as third party firewalls. Be sure to run only >one< firewall.
