We are on a network and someone in our company has infected everyone and I can not seem to solve the problem. I have lost my use of most of my programs in the control panel. I can not run a windows update (Error number: 0x80070424). Please help.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

Post a new log in this thread when finished. :)

Dear Micah_6:8: Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I ran a scan before leaving last night on Trend-micro Housecall and came up with nothing. Decided to rerun it this morning and so far have found one virus in two places: Virus:Troj otorun.a Status: Non cleanable Location: c:\0VDB Shared Stuff\msinstl.exe and c:\doucuments and settings\all users\documents\msinstl.exe and c:msinstl.exe These state that they are non cleanable, do I delete? Sherry

They are not system critical files..... I would say delete is your only option. :)

Dear Micah_6:8,

Ok, I have done the following:

Under trend I came up with the following:
Virus:Troj otorun.a
Status: Non cleanable
Location: c:\0VDB Shared Stuff\msinstl.exe
and
c:\doucuments and settings\all users\documents\msinstl.exe
and
c:msinstl.exe

deleted all!

Under Panda:

w32/protoride.b.worm/operating system
w32\bagle.pwdzip\local folders\sent items\fw: email\warning\text zip

both disinfected:

upon each rebot, I receive the following message:

"You have used the system config utility to make changes to the way windows starts. The system config util is currently in diagnostic or selective startup mode causing this mess to be displayed and the utility to run everytime windows starts.
Choose normal startup mode on general tab to start windows normally and undo all changes you made using the system config. utility."

Should I do this?

The log is clean.

In case you haven't noticed, somewhere along the way you have "lost" this file:

c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\startup\msupdate.exe

It was in the 1st log, but is gone now. It's actually the file that had me concerned most (out of the ones I could see, anyway). I think it was malicious.

About that message you get on bootup. I think it is covered here:

System config

It appears you need to go to:

Start > Run, type msconfig then press <enter>.

Then check the dot next to Normal startup as shown at that link.

Dear Micah_6:8, Thank you so much for all your help. My control panel is working again and I was able to apply the .dll file fixes from Microsoft for updates (Error number: 0x80070424). Thanks again for all your help, you are the best! Sherry :P

I'm just glad we could help, Ma'am

GOD bless!!!

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.o...topic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiu...ww/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck....s.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
(Personally, I'm NOT recommending SP2 for XP at this time)
