Been trying for a few days to clean up my friend's computer, but it seems that no matter what I do it keeps coming back. I ran both Spybot and Ad-aware… Ad-ware finds A LOT more than Spybot does, and when I fix the problems, Ad-aware says that it can't remove a few files, and if I want it to try and startup. I said yes, and when it ran again, Ad-aware ran but then stopped responding so I had to close the program.

Here is a HiJack This! Log for you to look at, also here is a screen cap of the message I get from Ad-aware about which files it cannot remove.

You can find it by clicking HERE.

Thanks!!!

Seem's to be in your system restore. ME One of the best features of Windows ME is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal or hacker. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account, which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account. Win ME To disable System Restore: 1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. 2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F. 3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box. 4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer. 5. To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box. Then post another log please after you run an ad-awear scan.
Sorry it took so long for me to reply. Havent' been able to get to my friend's house to do the fixing.

Here is what I did…

I disabled the system restore option like you said.
I rebooted.
I ran ad-aware.
I ran HiJack This and created the following log.
I re-enabled system restore.

That's the correct order, right?

Thanks!

I'm a little confused… she isn't running XP. She's running ME with Office 2000. Should I still follow the steps to disable it?
About half way down

NOTE: This only applies to computers running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. To uninstall the "support for fast searching" feature, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all Office programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click to select Microsoft Office XP product, where Office XP product is the name of the specific Office product being used. If you are using a standalone version of one of the Office programs, click to select the appropriate product in the list. Click Add/Remove.
  5. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, select Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.

This displays the Choose installation options for all Office applications and tools dialog box.
  6. Click the plus sign (+) next to the Office Tools, click the icon next to Support for fast searching, and then select the Not Available installation state from the shortcut menu that appears.
  7. After you change the installation state for Support for fast searching, click Update.
  8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for all other Office XP products installed.
