I have requested that an expert take a look at your log. Hopefully they will be able to soon but as you can see the forums are really busy and it may take a bit so I would say at this point lets leave it for the night. I would advise that you scan with hijackthis again and post a neew log as this is always helpful.
I ran regedit and the instructions at the link you provided did indeed fix the problem.

Thank you so much for all of your help.

Gratefully,

They're BAAAAAAAAACK! :( Something else has taken over my husband's computer. SpyBot & Adaware are detecting attempted changes to the registry and installation of foreign programmes. Some of the programmes include: winsearch.exe, TBPS.exe, WinTools.exe. Before I managed to shut down the browser (which had opened all by itself, the screen that I saw congratulated me for successfully installing WebSearch. The computer is effectively locked up as I am denying access to the registry via my spyware programmes. I will reboot in safe mode and try to run an HJT log and will post here. tessc :wall:
I have booted to safe mode on my husband's computer.

I am doing all of this from MY computer, which thankfully seems to be clean.

Here is the latest HJT log:

I rebooted in regular mode and all of my protection software is coming up showing me that something is making alterations to the registry and the browser. Do you want me to allow it to just do its worst and then do a HJT scan?
