Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

I am so confused

After searching around to try to figure out what the h*ll is going on with my box, it was recommended to someone else that they run hijack. Well this made sence so I tried too. Unfirtunately after running the program I am more confused than before. I was going to just check all of the boxes ( frustration makes us stupid at times, give me a break) and a message came across saying I should ask for help.

Well, I am begging for help. Does any of this make sence to you wizards?

I greatly appreciate any help you can give…

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

First, try going to:

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, then remove:

WebHancer

Reboot afterwards.

If it's not there don't worry. We have other ways of removing it.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these items:

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\winnt\dolh.dll <— file

c:\winnt\oqlgqto.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)
Well that was interesting. I lost my internet connection after fixing the files you recommended. I must have screwed something up in the process… I am back up and running though, thanks to my local isp tech suport.

I did not see "webhancer" in the list of programs under Add/remove programs. I did see zip files of the program when I did a search for it. I left the zip files…

I fixed all of the items in the log that you mentioned

I was not able to find the dolh.dll file. I found a dohl.gif and deleted that, but I am sure that is not the issue.

I deleted the oqlgqto.exe file

Thank you so much, you rule!!!

Here's a Hijack This! tutorial:

HJT Tutorial

It is possible to restore things accidentally "fixed".

Almost there…

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This! and fix these items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webHancer Survey Companion] "C:\Program Files\webHancer\Programs\whSurvey.exe"

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\program files\webhancer <— FOLDER

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)
I have fixed the item you mentioned in hijack.

I still can not find the webhancer folder. I did both a manual search and a Start > Search > for files and folders, for it and the only thing that I can find is:
webhancer.zip
webhancer2.zip
etc through webhancer15.zip
I found these files in:
C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery

Here is the new log…

Don't worry about it.

It's not in the log.

It looks like you've got the malware eliminated!!!

GOD bless!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.
