Something Is Still Slowing Down Internet Browsing

I recently had several adwares and other annoying toolbars removed from my system. All of my previous problems (pop-ups fighting through a blocker, annoying toolbars, and unwanted favorites being added constantly) are gone except that something seems to still be chewing up my bandwith. I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot but I figured I'd start here. An updated Norton, Adaware, and Spybot have all been run successfully and I believe that everything in my HJT log should be there (some optional things that I have installed included). The only thing that I seem to notice on a consistent basis that may be a problem is that in my task mgr my system idle process is running at 94-97 cpu. Is this killing my download capabilities? Is this a remnant of something that I got rid of? Could I have removed something that is now causing me problems? Thanks for any advice anyone can give. I'd be very grateful for any help. Here is my HJT log:

skeener14 – Thanks for sending hte logfile. You still have a Netster infection.

You are running an old version of HijackThis. Please download the latest version of HijackThis(v1.98.2) and unzip it to your 'C:\Hijack This\' folder.

1 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com (HKLM)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com (HKLM)
O9 - Extra button: MoneySide (HKLM)

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/02b79c28f5fe6744b601/…ip/RdxIE601.cab

This is an optional item you may choose to fix:

Application Scheduler is installed along with RealOne Player and is running in startup, and is not needed. Once installed, it runs independently of RealOne Player and consumes resources. You can fix this with HJT, but you will also need to set it not to load in RealPlayer itself to keep it from resetting itself: (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK This is the item to fix in HJT:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

2 – While still in safe mode, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes). Delete the entire contents of that "temp" folder (use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes").

Then, Empty your Temporary Internet Cache completely. Close all instances of Outlook and and Internet Explorer, then use "Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab" and click the "Delete File" button. When prompted place a check in: "Delete all offline content", then click OK.

Then, use Windows Explorer to clean out ALL the other temp folders on your system (navigate to the folder, use "Edit > Select All", press "Delete", click "Yes"):

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

3 – And run both of these two Online virus scans: Panda Active Scan and TrendMicro Housecall and put on Auto Clean.
Please let me know if anything can not be cleaned by these utilities.

Now, reboot normally, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

Thanks
daveai
Thanks for the help. I apologize for getting back so late but it took me quite a while to run those two web checks. I had to let them go overnight. I still seem to be having some trouble with downloading…here is my new log.

Thanks for the response, skeener14. Welcome back :)

Given your report about the excessive CPU time problem, I'd like to see you:

Download and run Stinger - A brilliant tool which updates frequently and is very effective against the malwares

Your logfile appears clean at first glance, so there may be an underlying infection that is being missed by the online scans. Thus, Stinger.

Please let me know the results.

Also, one possibility is that the download problems are being caused by outgoing traffic on your system.

Take a look at the firewall information below, and consider installing one that will report on outgoing traffic.

Consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

I'll look forward to your next post.
daveai
I ran Stinger and it found nothing. I have Windows XP Firewall installed and to be honest, I'm not positive how well it is working. I tend to be hesitant to trust Windows updates immediately after they are released. There still seems to be some problems, I am currently contacting my ISP to make sure that the speed I ordered is being administered correctly. My PC is still not running as it used to but I can't seem to find anything wrong. I appreciate all your help and I'm not sure what to do. Should I try restoring my system via a recovery CD???!? I hope not but I'm just not sure what is still slowing me down. My downloads are still operating at 12.5 kb per sec or so. Any advice??? Thanks again for all your help
Apparently according to my ISP the problem is bandwith. I guess I have too many computers connected at the same time and even though they are suspended they are still tying up bandwith. Does this make sense to you? It seems to be working a bit better now. Sorry if the lack of this information didn't help you help me.
Interesting info, skeener14.

How are the computers connected, and how many? If the other units are idle, there surely must be a way to configure things up to prevent them from goobling up bandwidth. Share a little more info with me. I'm no network expert, but might be able to point you toward some who are.

As for your logfile…it's clean. But then, you just told me that the 'slows' were not being caused by malware :)

Which brings us to my standard prevention 'sermon':

Please allow me to suggest some prevention steps to keep your computer clean and secure going forward. You may have already taken a few of the steps, but it never hurts to take a quick look :)

1 – Use an AntiVirus Software, and be sure you update it at least once a week. There are several very good free programs available. Grinler offers an outstanding overview at Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

2 – To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future, I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

3 – Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D; to regularly to scan your system.

4 – It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and XP are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

5 – Consider using a Firewall. Just by using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Check out what Lawrence Abrams has to say at Understanding and Using Firewalls

An excellent overview is: So how did I get infected in the first place?. Be sure to visit the browser test link at the end of the article to really see how secure your system is!!

Thanks
daveai
There are two laptops and one desktop connected to the wireless router that I have set up with a 2.0Mbps?? connection speed. I think it's only about 1.5 actually though. All three computers are less than two years old with the one that I am currently using being the middle of the three. I have shut down the PC and the other lap top, rather than letting them sit in suspend mode. My ISP has told me that bandwith gets equally divided three ways when you have three comps connected to a wireless router, regardless of whether they are in suspend mode or not. I figured with the speed that I had purchased, it would not be a problem but apparently I was wrong. Things seem to be running well now so long as I only have one or two computers connecting at once. Apparently according to my ISP there is no way to boost the signals preferentially to the PC's that are actually utilizing the connection at the time. Thanks for checking my logfiles, you were a big help. I'm glad to be back to functioning normally. :D skeener14
Glad to hear all is well. Thanks for the 'education' about the wireless router network :) You are very welcome for the help…it's a pleasure to do it. Thanks for visiting Tom Coyote daveai
Perhaps I could trouble you one last time…

I now have acquired another malware…xlime I believe it is called. Attached is my log. I have tried many things including the same process I went through last time but they were unsuccessful…. here is my log

Skeener14 – Thanks for sending your HijackThis log.

You are running Weatherbug, and although this is considered an optional item "… the free version is ad-supported containing both banner and pop-up ads. It also installs a My Search toolbar." I've added the removal instructions for this in the fix below.

Go ahead and print these instructions, or save them to your desktop, to help keep track of the steps.

1 – Next, use Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to remove any of the following malware that it finds:

Weatherbug (optional removal)

3 – Run HijackThis, and press Scan, and put a check against the following entries, if they still show up. Make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: LocalNRDObj Class - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - C:\WINDOWS\localNRD.dll

And the optional removal:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

Once you have selected all the items for HJT to fix, make sure all browsers and program windows are closed except for HijackThis, and click fix checked.

4 – While still in safe mode, use Windows Explorer to delete the following lists of program files and folders, if they still exist.

C:\WINDOWS\localNRD.dll <– this file (may already be gone)

C:\Program Files\AWS\ <– this folder (optional removal)

5 – Next, use "Start > Run" and type in "%temp%" (without the quotes).

* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\
* C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\
* Empty your "Recycle Bin".

Please let me know about any problems with the temp file deletes.

Now, reboot normally, and create a new logfile forme th review

Thanks

skeener14 – Congratulations, based on your last HijackThis logfile, no spyware was found. Good job!
