Can anyone advise me on this? My computer gives me this message on start up. Error loading C:\ProgramFiles\Wild Tangent\apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll. I also have a search bar that intermittently appears on the desk top on start-up. I used to have problems accessing Google, Hotmail, Yahoo, Symantec but I deleted host files and that fixed it. :) But I still have the error message on start-up. I ran SpyBot which doesn't fix it. Any help much appreciated, thanks
Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Download HijackThis into this folder.

If required a tutorial is here = Hijackthis Folder Tutorial

Run it from that folder.

Click "Scan".

DO NOT "FIX" ANYTHING WITH IT YET!!!
FIXING THE WRONG THING COULD RENDER YOUR SYSTEM INOPERABLE!!!

Click "Save log".

Reply to this thread, and post the ENTIRE CONTENTS of the log file into this thread. :)
Here's my log-file. Thanks for your help. Looking forward to a clean computer: ;)

Well.. I see a lot of malware in the log.

Most sources consider "Wild Tangent" as spyware. I suggest going to:

Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstalling it. That should get rid of your immeadiate problem. Reboot afterwards to complete the uninstall.

Now… On to the other malware…

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well). Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES. Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, REBOOT your system.

Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, ALWAYS check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware. THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings.
To scan, click NEXT. This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say YES to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?" Reboot again.

Then, please try these free online virus scans of your system:

Trend-Micro:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

Panda:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

Etrust:
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

Choose fix or clean.

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot inbetween each scan.

After the last scan, reboot and post a new log file in this thread. :)
Micah - I followed your instructions. My new log is below. The only thing I couldn't do was delete Wild Tangent from the Add/Remove programs - it wasn't there, or at least I couldn't find it. Anyway, here's the log:

Reboot in "safe" mode. Use the link in my signature to tell you how if necessary.

Find and delete:

c:\program files\wildtangent <— FOLDER

c:\winnt\system32\msidntld.exe <— file

c:\winnt\system32\tvjohwb.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden". Use the link in my signature to explain how to show "hidden" files if necessary.

Reboot in normal mode and post a new log file. :)

Could you supply info on this file:

c:\winnt\system32\wdnpsvc.exe <— file

Navigate to it and pass your cursor over it and post back what pops up on the screen (info like who wrote the file, it's size, and creation date)
Mica - I fixed all the items you said in HJT.

I couldn't find a wildtangent folder, or a tvjohwb.exe file even after unhiding files. I deleted the msidntld.exe file.

The file wdnpsvc.exe is from Wall Data inc., it's 40KB, created Nov 2001. Probably something to do with my laptops earlier life. I think it's legit.

Here's the log. The computer is running much better. Is there more to do?

Yup.. that file looks legit.

Don't loose any sleep over not finding those files. As long as they aren't running they aren't a threat.

You've done an excellent job!!!

The log is clean now!!!!

GOD bless!!!

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?" here:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Download IE-Spyad here:

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings here:

http://browsercheck.qualys.com/index.php

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

I have recurrence of a previous issue. Is this the right forum? I can't access google, yahoo, hotmail, symantec and others. A page comes up saying ".can't access Google/Yahoo etc…" The title bar of the page is More Useful Everyday.

Can you help with this? Many thanks. If it helps, here's my current log.
