Illukka

Thank you for your advice.

I have struck difficulties however, when following the link to the latest version of hijackthis. I end up at the web page below unable to find a clear link to the latest version of hijackthis.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe

I presume this is as a result of my computer being so badly corrupted that I cant get where I am supposed to go.

Any assistance you can offer?

Thanks
Illukka

I did what I probably should have done in the first place and download another version of hijackthis from Tomcoyote. You can probably ignore my previous posting.

Here is a logfile taken with a more recent version hjk

Your views much appreciated.

Thanks again.

start apm, in the uper panel select explorer.exe, and in the lower panel search for C:\WINNT\system32\jkd.dll and C:\WINNT\system32\jkd.dll.
when you find them , right click on both( one at a time) and select unload dll, clik ok on the propts that follow

let's see if it goes away just like that..

reboot into safe mode(tap f8 at boot)
delete following files:

C:\WINNT\system32\services\msxmidi.exe
check what else there is in that folder..?

C:\WINNT\system32\jkd.dll

C:\Documents and Settings\Catherine van Vliet\Application Data\patc.exe

C:\WINNT\System32\nzdd.dll

C:\DOCUME~1\CATHER~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
clean the contents of that folder

run cwshredder, preferably scan with adaware too, reboot and post a fresh hijackthis log
oh yes, if you haven't got adaware:

Download Ad-aware SE from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

* Automatically save log-file
* Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
* Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

* Scan Within Archives
* Scan Active Processes
* Scan Registry
* Deep Scan Registry
* Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
* Scan my Hosts file
* Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
* All of your hard drives

Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

* Include additional process information
* Include additional file information
* Include environment information

Click the Tweak button and select:

* Under the Scanning Engine:
o Unload recognized processes & modules during scan
o Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
* Under the Cleaning Engine:
o Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click on Proceed to save the settings.

Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

* Use Custom Scanning Options

Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

Reboot your computer.

post a new hijackthis log
Hello Michaelarp,

You have one of the more severe infections that we see nowadays. This infection often installs a super-hidden dll file on your computer that reinstalls the infection each time you Restart your computer. The task here is to find if there is a superhidden dll, then make it visible so that we can delete it before we can get rid of the rest of the infection.

Step#1

First of all to find the name and location of the possible hidden file I need you to use this program:

1. Please download DllCompare
( The Screenshot will show you how the program will look when it starts.)

2. Start the Program with its default settings and put a check mark in the include subdirectories. Click the Run Locate.com and wait until the scan says complete.

3. Click the Compare button to start the next process.

4. Files in the upper portion have been verified to "exist", Files in the bottom section were not able to be accessed. Very few files should be listed in the bottom section when the Compare scan is complete.

5. Click on each of the listed entries in the lower section to select them. Right-click on the file and use the Option Rescan screenshot.

6. This will cause Windows Find to see if the file does exist, and then it will be removed from the list (to reduce the number of identified files) screenshot

7. Click the Make a Log of what was found button, and post the log here in this thread using Add Reply to receive further instructions.

Step#2

We need to be sure that all hidden files and folders are visible to you:

Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab) and choose to "show hidden files and folders," uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes. Close the window with ok

Step#3

Please download this tool to fix the start.chm hijack that I see in your log file.

1. Download Start CHM Fix to your Desktop .

2. Run it and it will extract the folder to the desktop and Open the folder after extracted.

3. Please make sure all Windows including Internet Explorer are closed.

4. Double click the fix.bat (Only run it once or you will lose the backups although they shouldn't be needed).

5. Notepad will open at the end with a message and the bad file listing at the end.

6. Please post that bad file listing line here. The Tool is designed so that if it is unable to remove the file, it will tell the user to reboot and will remove the bad file on Reboot.

7. If no files show in the bad file listing then do a Reboot and do a search for either of these highlighted files and DELETE them:

C:\Windows\System32\ C_10230.DLL or
C:\Windows\System\crt32_v2.dll

8. Reboot

9. Rescan with HijackThis and post a new log file using 'Add Reply'.

Please post the log from DllCompare and the new HJT log so that I can give you further instructions to remove the rest of the nasties.

Good Luck!
Illukka

Thank you.

machine is behaving better already.

When I first ran dllcompare program it did not come up with anything in the bottom panel. We I tried to push the bottom to create a log it wouldn't do it. I have run it after having completed the recommend from yourself and Illukka and here is the resulting log.

Thanks
hi
good news! you did a good job there

like Dorothy wrote: This infection often installs a super-hidden dll file on your computer that reinstalls the infection each time you Restart your computer

this wasn't the case obviously here and it was fixed with the simplier fix!

now to prevent this from happening again read this
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971

question: are you running two different antivirus programs at the same time?
please disable the other's real time protection and keep it as an on-demand scanner only. using 2 different av's can cause conflicts between them, resulting in no protection at all.. even more, it causes a continuous drain on your system..
Hi michaelarp

There is an entry that I still recommend you clean up. It is usually optional, however in these infections it is installed every time so I believe that it is part of the infection rather than the optional file we are used to. If we don't get everything that it installed it may reinstall itself after several reboots. Also do you use a proxy server to access the university through port 8080? The second line of the lower half of your log file indicates that you do. Please check to make sure that you use that proxy port for what you do at the university because the spyware can redirect you through the addition of that port in that line. If you are not using proxy port 8080 then delete that line in the HJT log by putting a check mark beside it.

You were lucky to have the variant without the hidden dll - these scumware writers are sneaky, some come with the really bad infection , others are fairly easy to cleanup with the tools we normally use, and there is no difference in the log files. This is why we always have to look for the hidden dll because if it is there, it will be a totally different fix.

1. Please Scan again with HijackThis and put a check mark beside the following entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy.monash.edu.au:8080 <— only if bad!

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe <– added by the spyware

2. Click Fix Checked

3. REBOOT into safe mode by tapping F8 repeatedly while booting up

4. In Safe Mode DELETE the following file

C:\??\PowerReg Scheduler.exe <— should be in the startup folder

5. REBOOT into normal mode

6. Scan again with HJT

7. POST a new log file here in this thread to make sure the infection hasn't returned

There are a few cleanups that will help to ensure you have removed all traces of the spyware:

There are a few things you should do once you are completely clean:

1. Go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

2. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

3. Empty your Recycle Bin

As Illukka mentioned it appears you have Computer Associates Vet AV product and Symantec's corporate edition of Norton AV running at the same time. Please choose the most up-to-date software and uninstall the other.
Dgosling

Thank you for your help.

re your last few recommendations.

I do believe "R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = proxy.monash.edu.au:8080" is necessary so I have kept it.

and regarding "O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe" I ran HJT fix checked this line and clicked ok and up rebooting in safe mode could not find it.

Here is my latest log.

Looks Clean Congratulations! Are you still having any problems?

I don't see the resident portions of Norton Antivirs. Are you running an onboard antivirus because I don't see one in your log. If not and you need an up-to-date AV program then there are two free ones available that are updated weekly with new definitiions:
AVG Free AntiVirus

Avast anti virus free
Avast Free AntiVirus

You also don't appear to be running a firewall which is essential when surfing the internet . There are also two free programs available:

Zone ALarm Free Firewall
Kerio Free Firewall

I think you may benefit from reading the article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of this post, for information on how to secure your PC from spyware/adware/malware.There are several small free programs mentioned there that help with securing your PC against this type of problem.
