Hi Alyluna
It appears that we didn't do the following at any time:

Step#1
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
* Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
* Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
* Select View the Entire contents of this drive.

Step#2

Now that we have set Windows to show hidden files (should have done this long ago - my fault) would you please look for those two files again and delete any that you find with those names please

Step#3

C:\WINDOWS\TASKS\AVMFC.EXE seems to be back again. I believe it is the file that is controlling the infection so we have to get rid of it. It had disappeared from the last log but that may have been because of the restrictions in the System Configuration Utility. I am going to get you to download a file killer for it.

1. Download it from:killbox

2. Just copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\TASKS\AVMFC.EXE into the box in killbox and click kill file.

3. Then use windows explorer to navigate to C:\WINDOWS\TASKS\AVMFC.EXE and delete the
file AVMFC.EXE

4. REBOOT, then navigate to C:\Windows\Tasks\ to make sure it is gone.

5. If you had trouble deleting any of the files above, use killbox to get rid of them as well.

Step#4

1. Scan again with HJT

2. POST the log again in this thread

Good Luck!
Hello!

I've reset the Hidden Files option to Show All, but I can't locate the file AVMFC.EXE. I've searched by date created, etc. but it doesn't show up. I ran another HiJackThis Log and it's still there. Any thoughts?

I do think we're making progress though, because I rebooted this morning and it booted right up.

Thanks,

Alyluna

OK, here's the log.

Hi Alyluna,

There is a free Registry Editor that is very easy to use. Please download REgistrar Lite and Install it to its own folder.

Step #1

*Please do not make any changes to the registry until I tell you what to remove*

Open it and click on Search then Search Registry
When the window opens enter AVMFC in the Text to search for box. Then select Registry for the Search In box.
Make sure there is a check mark in key names, Value names, and Data.
Click on the magnifying glass at the bottom left of the window.

It will return a list of places that the word AVMFC is in the registry. Please post the list of locations here in this thread.

Step #2

There is a function of windows which may be contributing to your problems. It is called 'Universal Plug and Play'. It has nothing to do with plug and play hardware that is attached to your computer. If you are not on a network then you have not use for this item that microsoft leaves active for no reason. If you are not on a network then go to Start>Settings>Control Panel >Add Remove Programs > Windows tab (I think it's the second tab). Look in each category Accessories, Communications, etc and find Universal Plug N Play and remove the check mark. Then REBOOT

Step #3

Post the information from Registrar Lite with a new HJT log and we can see if we can get rid of AVMFC. I suspect it may be a super-hidden file that we can get rid of by editing the registry.

good luck!
Wow! The Registrar Lite Tool found the following entries with AVMFC in the register:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer Bars\{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}\ContainingTextMRU

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Explorer
Bars\{C4EE31F3-4768-11D2-BE5C-00A0C9A83DA1}\FilesNamedMRU

I found the Plug and Play function and have disabled it (that one was easy)

Here's the new HJT log!

Thanks so much.

Alyluna
Hi Alyluna,

Next I think we need to hunt down that file: AVMFC.exe I also think there may be a DLL file with the same name and possibly a DAT. I am also going to have you stop a service that should not be running now that you have disabled UPnP.

Step#1

1. Please Start > Run and type msconfig. Open the System Configuration Utility and go to the Startup tab. Uncheck the entry for C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE

2. REBOOT.

Step#2

1. Open Reglite

2. Copy and Paste the contents of the following QUOTE box into the address bar in Reglite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run-

3. The run- key will be highlighted. ON the menu choose, File>Export and export the contents of the key for backup as Winkey.hiv and Winkey.hiv.reg

4. In the right hand pane should be the AVMFC.exe (there should be two copies of it), Double-click on it and delete the value in the value box of the edit box. If there are two copies delete the value in the edit box in each copy of the file.

5. REBOOT

6. Use Start > Find AVMFC.exe (make sure that the spelling is correct as we transposed the spelling before).

7. Delete all copies of AVMFC.exe

8. Use Start > Find AVFMC and delete all copies of any file with that name.

9. REBOOT

Step#3

1. Scan again with HJT

2. Post a new log with any information you have gathered in the previous steps.

Good Luck!

P.S I sent you a pm tonight but you were offline when I sent it. We can try again tomorrow night if you like.
OK, I opened RegLite and did as you instructed. After I rebooted, I used the Start Find Files/Folders and searched for AVMFC.exe but it was not found. Of course, when I scanned with HJT, there it was! This is quite a bug…..

Here's the new log.

Thanks!

Oh, Dgosling, I ended up putting my computer in DOS mode, as you suggested, and then typed in the commands you gave me, but they did not work. While trying to get back to normal mode, the computer froze. I then turned it off and restarted , but it got stuck in the Windows ME screen. I left it on overnight, in hopes that it would be back to Windows in the morning but it was still stuck. I decided that I didn't want to spend anymore energy or time on this, so I used the system restore disk. Of course, I lost most of my files as I had not backed them all up (let that be a lesson for me). Anyway, my computer is now working fine and I'm not stressed out. Now, what can I do to prevent these virus infections from taking over my computer? I certainly appreciate all of the time and energy you have spent on trying to resolve my computer problems. You have been a tremendous resource! I'm a banker by profession, so if you ever need a resource in banking, feel free to pick my brain! Sincerely, Alyluna
I am so sorry it got to that point, however, I suspected you might want to use the restore disk in the end, if we didn't get it cleaned up soon. Unfortunately, these infections take ages to clean out of the system files and as you know are very time consuming. On the other hand there are some infections that take a couple of hours to clean and that's it. In the future it would be best to have someone check your HJT log file to see what you are infected with before deciding to use the restore disk as it might be an easily cleaned infection.

1. There are several things that you can do to protect yourself. The article "How Did I Get Infected In The First Place" linked at the bottom of this post, will give a list with links of several small free programs mentioned that will help with securing your PC against this type of problem. Download and install the small programs there.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

3. Another cleanup that will help is to go to Start>Programs>Acccessories>System Tools> Disk Cleanup and put a check mark beside all the entries in the disk cleanup window that ask you what you want to clean. Clean all hard drives and all files. This will get rid of any malware that is hiding in the temporary folders.

4. Make sure that all are gone, by checking the folders that the Temporary Internet Files and Temp files are stored in. To do so use Control Panel > Internet Options(or right click the IE icon on the desktop and choose Properties). Click Delete Files on the General Tab - place a check in the Delete all offline content box, then 'Clear History' and then press OK

5. Empty your Recycle Bin

6. Double Check the following folders to make sure they are empty:C:\Windows\Profiles\userprofilename\Temp\ folder and
C:\WIndows\Profiles\userprofilename\Temporary Internet Files\ You may also find them in C:\Windows\Temp and C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

7. You do not appear to have a firewall running and there are a few available for free that have excellent reputations. This is essential for surfing the Internet:
Zone ALarm Free Firewall
Kerio Free Firewall

8. Always use an Antivirus program that you can update the definitions every few days. An old AV program if it is not updated with current virus definitions is useless. Only run one AV product as they will conflict if there are two of them. This is essential when you are using the internet. Two free ones are listed here, take your pick:
AVG Free AntiVirus
Avast Free AntiVirus

9. Always run a firewall when on the Internet. There are a few available for free that have excellent reputations:
Zone ALarm Free Firewall
Kerio Free Firewall

10. Use Ad-Aware and Spybot SD weekly (both updated) to check what is on your PC and maybe remove something before it causes a variety of infections by opening a hole in IE.

Good Luck to you and thanks again!
