Hello follow techies,

I seem to be having an issue on my Desktop Computer, related to USB devices. I purchased 2 USB PCI-E expansion cards to plug in peripherial devices to my computer. I don't use any USB hubs. This includes around 13 external Hard disk drives and 1 ROM drive, Keyboard and Mouse. In addition to that, I also have a few devices plugged into my USB controllers on my motherboard slots.  So far I have never really experienced many problems with USB devices disconnecting until I added my 13th device on my computer. All the sudden, i have a few hard drives that are disconnecting, the same 2 hard drives each time is disconnecting and reconnecting intermently during peak processing times.

Also I do want to mention that I have 6 Internal Drives connected to Serial Ata ports with a PCI-E Sata expansion card to accomodate the extra drives. Some of these drives are plugged directly into the PSU as well.

My PSU is a 850 Watt Gold standard EVGA

Also I have had issues with fans slowing down or even stopping all together and I had to replace fans quite frequently.

I want to know if this is an issue related to bandwidth USB controllers or if its a PSU problem. I am not sure which or if its even a combination of both. Generally speaking your supposed to be able to connect upwards to 127 USB devices at once so overloading the USB controllers shouldn't be the problem. But I am not sure. It may also be that some of the USB controllers may be damaged?

Either way How can I go about troubleshooting this issue. How do I know how much Volts my devices on my computer are pulling from my PSU and how do I test my Bandwidth for my USB controllers.

Appreciate any help i can get and resolving these issues. I have alot of data on my drives and I really do not want them to get damaged.

Couple of obvious questions to begin with;

What happens if you don`t add this additional device, do things settle down again.

What happens if you connect this additional device but then disconnect a similar device.

I have tested it without and yes i don't seem to have the issue at all. Not sure why Both USB devices disconnecting at the same time. But when I unplug them both, the problem dissapears so my assumption is that its either the controllers as in the slots that I am plugging those paticular cables into or that i am overloading the USB bandwidth.

With the exception of all the drives that you have can you post the brand and model name or number for the CPU, GPU, MB, PSU and RAM.

850 Watt Gold standard EVGA

Which would be great on the average PC but not for your build by the sounds of it, we could also do with knowing how old the PSU is + how many screens you have connected to the PC.

Yeah most people tell me that 850 watts PSU is ok but I honsetly don't think so. With all of the connected devices and fans I am running, it could very well be a Power related issue.

So Its just a single screen monitor, an Acer 17 in half inch.

I had an Upgrade to my PC in 2016 so by today's standards it is fairly older and It is about time I upgrade it again, especailly the PSU, CPU and Graphics card.

Here is my full build Details:

A lot of drives but the rest of the build is not power hungry so I reckon that the present PSU is fine.

The MB not being able to handle the additional drive is my suspicion and being that you so have so many drives you would benefit from having an external powered USB hub in any event.
