Can use DISM for .ESD (windows is compressed) repair below without converting to .WIM:
Run as admin & fix # of OS and letter of installation flash drive:
! Be sure to use the right Drive letter so likely replace the E.

1-insert OS flashdrive,2- copy 1st string to Word doc if letter not same as your flash; otherwise just run to see number, 3-change the letter of OS flash if necessary, in Word then 4-copy corrected string and paste into cmd as admin. 5-when know letter and number = run second string
Get OS # with 1st string = dism /get-wiminfo /wimfile:E:\sources\install.esd

2nd string Get DISM fix for .ESD from flash drive = Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:esd:E:\Sources\Install.esd:6 /limitaccess

>>The reason I posted this is b/c it seems so many are looking to use .wim since the 1903 version which is .esd.
I was trying to help by showing you do not have to use .Wim.

Thanks Peter.

For those interested:

  • 1903 is a build of Windows 10
  • DISM is Deployment Image Servicing and Management, a command-line tool that is used to mount and service Windows images before deployment.
  • .ESD is a Microsoft Windows Electronic Software Download file.  A file type commonly found with windows upgrades.  It stores encrypted .WIM files.
  • .WIM is Windows Imaging Format.  It was the file type introduced with Vista.  It can contain multiple images that can be mounted with DISM.

Peter, looks like what you posted was copied directly from here: .esd does work without .wim

Should have benna quote and you need to provide attribution when you copy some from another site, especially the entire post. Otherwise it's plagiarism which most sites frown on.

Still doesn't make any more sense to me there than it does here.

Yes, you can use either, it doesn't have to be a .wim. Be careful to use the correct index number for your edition, the 6 in your example is for Pro in the 1903 esd.
