Yahoo Mail in Chrome not functioning, for starters

7 min read

Looking for the outcome? Ask AI

This is what prompted this post.  When an email is opened, clicking the X to close it does nothing and clicking the up or down arrows to change emails does nothing.  Pressing the Esc key does nothing; normally this closes the email.  Yahoo Mail does work in Firefox.

Tried running the aswMBR, and got an error that Avast AntiRootkit had stopped and Windows would close it.  I have not rebooted yet but can't get aswMBR to run again; it just stalls loading Avast engine.

FRST completed.

Open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
If it asks to update definitions please allow it.

Click the Dashboard tab, choose Scan, Threat Scan is checked and click Start Scan.
If threats are detected, click the Apply Actions button. You will now be prompted to reboot. Click Yes.
Upon completion of the scan (or after the reboot), click the Reports tab.
Double-click the Scan Log.
At the bottom click Export and choose Text file.

Save the file to your desktop and include its content in your next reply.

You can access the logs by going in the "Reports" tab, clicking on the latest "Scan" entry (the one with detections), then clicking on the "Export" button in the bottom-left corner and select "Copy to clipboard". After that, all you have to do is paste it here

  • Save the log on your desktop, then open it, and copy/paste its content in your next reply;

Also, tell me how the computer is now.

Ok, ran those.  Just an FYI: at least half of the instructions you gave me need a small update, like buttons on the left when they were on the right or, this last one, there is no Quarantine Records to select, just the Export.  Also, the email started working after the previous scans so that's good, but keep going if there is more to clean up!

Just an FYI: at least half of the instructions you gave me need a small update, like buttons on the left when they were on the right or, this last one, there is no Quarantine Records to select, just the Export.

Yikes,  that means I'm out of date!
When they do program updates we're the last to know.

Also, the email started working after the previous scans so that's good, but keep going if there is more to clean up!

I think we're done.  Looking over what was found I think all was removed.

Let's remove tools and quarantined files.
  • Please download DelFix or from Here and save the file to your Desktop.
  • Double-click DelFix.exe to run the programme.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following items:
  • Activate UAC
  • Remove disinfection tools
  • Click the Run button.
  • – This will remove the specialized tools we used to disinfect your system.
Any leftover logs, files, folders or tools remaining on your Desktop which were not removed can be deleted manually (right-click the file + delete
    ).
