It's kinda sorta a gimmick but not really.
That article is very well written and clearly points out the caveats. While this service makes it harder for your ISP to track your travels about the Internet, you are still going through their network, so they can still track you if they want. And of course, that 1.1.1.1 service can track you too. So as the author points out, you have to trust they are not lying.
Will it really protect your privacy better? Hard to say because other services still track our every moves - Google, for example. And of course your cell phone provider is tracking everything, including who you texted and talked to, where you are standing (including the aisle of the store you are in), where you have been and the direction you are moving and how fast you are traveling.
I say if you are not having problems, there's no harm in using it. You are not any worse off than before.
