Browser contents blacked out [Closed]

I posted this issue on the browser forum where the Tech Team suggested it may be a malware problem and I should post here.

 

I have our Rural Fire Brigade's Toshiba Satellite notebook with Win7 64-bit Home Premium with Microsoft Security Essentials. It had not had Windows updates applied for a few months so I started installing them one-by-one by type and date. This went well except that the IE11 update said it was successful but is still listed in the important updates and the optional Win platform update fails.

 

I tried to check the training videos for our AED training but dllhost.exe consumed over 90% of the 4Gb of RAM. I eventually worked out that this was caused by the first video being corrupt. Once I replaced it with a fresh download (on my personal PC), the dllhost.exe memory problem disappeared.

 

I then tried to go to the Rural Fire Service District website to check for some training materials for our next training day (14 Feb).

 

Our default browser, Firefox, opened but all but a few items in the window were blacked out and the loading icon took quite a long time to stop. One picture (which is a random picture from the District activities) did appear but that is the only content I could see. None of the menu items were visible.

 

I then tried IE with a similar result; the settings icon displayed and the address bar also displayed.

 

I have done a PrtSc of each and attached them to this post.

 

As far as I could tell, all other functions were OK. I ran some of the training videos in Windows Media Player without issues and opened and created a document in Apache Office. I could also copy and paste files between folders and between the USB drive and HDD.

 

Device Manager does not show any issues and the Toshiba PC Diagnostics utility does not report any problems.

Where do I go from here to restore the browser functionality, please?

See if you can do this and set FF back to default

  • Open Firefox
  • Click on Help > Troubleshooting Information > Reset Firefox to its default state
 
 
If not than go to Programs and Features in the Control Panel and see if you can uninstall FF, then use the link below to download and reinstall

Thank you, Ken545, for that response.

 

I was unable to reset to defaults as, when I managed to click on points where I expected drop down menus they came up as just blacked out dialog boxes. I also tried to enter the url to download Firefox and while I went to a different site I could not find any download buttons as again the page was mostly blacked out.

 

I had an old version of the Firefox setup executable (v 3.6.11) on my own PC still so I copied it to the Brigade PC, uninstalled both Firefox and the Firefox Maintenance (this one is not present with v3.6.11) programs through Control Panel and then installed the old version of Firefox. This opened normally with three tabs opened: one saying Firefox had been upgraded successfully, one showing the home page, and one showing that a newer version of Firefox was available and offering to upgrade to the new version (35.0.10).

 

I selected to upgrade and that seemed to progress as expected. However, when Firefox opened after the installation completed most of the content was blacked out again (there were a few more icons visible but no text/labels on menus etc.

 

So I again uninstalled Firefox through Control Panel and reinstalled the v3.6.11. That seems to be working normally at the moment. However, I would like to track down the blacking out problem as other Brigade members use this computer and sooner or later someone will see a message to upgrade to a newer version and will do that to suffer the blacking out issue again.

 

As I was having the same blacking out problem with Internet Explorer, I searched for Windows Components in Control Panel and uninstalled Internet Explorer v9. I haven't yet tried to replace IE.

 

Your advice on how best to resolve this problem would be appreciated.

Lets check your system for a virus or some other sort of malware and see if anything comes up

 

When you download FRST, you will need the 64bit version, also run both these programs from the desktop

    • Right click to run as administrator (XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File). When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Please make sure All Users is checked
    • Just keep the defaults as in the picture checkmarked
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool is run from.
    • Please copy and paste log back here.
    • The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory as FRST.exe/FRST64.exe). Please also paste that along with the FRST.txt into your reply.

      Hi,

       

      As far as malware your looking pretty good although I do see the Ask Tookbar and search engine present, there not really malicious but are considered inferior, it most likely came bundled with something you installed. aswMBR checks for a rootkit type of infection and its looking pretty good also

       

      Lets run a few tools to clean you up and then see what happens

              Hi Ken545. From the Malwarebytes image, I assumed I had to install the trial premium version; I trust this was right. Here are the logs.

               

              There is no AdwCleaner[S1].txt file on the PC; when the scan finished it opened AdwCleaner[S0].txt; in C:\AdwCleaner\ there is an AdwCleaner[R0].txt log as well. I'll attach both below.

              Hi Ken545,

               

              Not sure just where that homepage url came from. The homepage set is: http://www.monarorfs.org.au/

               

              The obsolescent version of Firefox (v3.6.11) is still working fine. However, when I tried to go to the support.google.com site I got a "browser not supported" message. This is not unexpected but could prove a problem with browsing with this old version of Firefox.

               

              I downloaded and installed Chrome and set the home page to monarorfs.org.au without any problem.  As this browser is working fine, at least for now, I think I'll live with that and not try to re-install current versions of IE and Firefox.

               

              I guess we won't know what caused (and possibly still is) the blacking out of the installed browsers IEv9 and Firefox v35.

              Thanks, its kind of odd that its effecting both browsers, if it was just one we could suspect some sort of corruption in that one but in two with the same thing its really puzzling.
