Install CCleaner. Open it, click on Tools then System Restore, See if it shows any restore points.
I made the novice goof by supplying too little information.
I just got through removing Norton with the tool and installing MSE which turned Defender off, it being part of the Vista OS..
I also installed SpywareBlaster and MBAM. The firewall is on.
I will perform the Ccleaner when she comes back and report back.
Thanks R.

Hi R
I could not see any points with Ccleaner.
I looked around and tried system restore in safe made and it was o.k..
After booting up it was still like a ghost.
I attempted to get it about 3 times and it kept saying it was running and would now close. I did that 3 times and the went to system restore where it was ghost like. I waited and all of a sudden it appeared normally. I created a point and it had about 13 points. I did not see a place to configure it as in other OS's but all seems to be OK. I am now running MBAM and will be back if there is an issue.
I would say running safe mode made the difference but cannot be sure.
Thank you
Peter
