I'm attempting to help out my friend with her computer--she opened an e-mail from a friend (who was hacked) and clicked on a link.

Although she can get Internet connection, she is unable to get IE 6 (or Chrome) to work and continues getting this error: c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm when attempting to get on any website.

I've uninstalled some add-ons that got onto her computer, and not sure what else to do. Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hi bluberry637,

  :welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Why is the system so far out of date? IE 6 is a problem. It is a major security risk and was replaced by IE 7 in 2006! She should probably be running IE 8 that was introduced in 2009. She's still running Java 5 which has more security holes than a screen door. We've been at Java 7 for three years now (Java 7 has now been updated 51 times). And most concerning of all... this system is running XP sp2. This is a 2004 version of the operating system. Sp3 came out in 2008. You can't even get updates for sp2 which means this system is missing literally many hundreds of security patches. Taking all of that into account and then adding that to the fact that extended support for XP ends in a month (April 8, 2014), I would say it would be more prudent to upgrade this computer to a current operating system rather than to try to repair this one. You can find some links here that will link you to information about things that should be considered with XP end of life.

All of that being said... if you want to try to resuscitate this system... I'm game if you are. ;)

I'd like to see a more detailed log before we start mucking about:

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

  •
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments,  attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------

  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply

Thanks Tomk for the insight! I will relay the message to her and see what she'd like to do. Updating to a more current OS is perhaps the best bet. Thank you again!
