Hi Experts,

I have purchased HP Probook 4540s laptop which came with pre-installed Windows 8 just a couple of days back. So a brand new laptop.. I am really worried about a wierd problem I am facing.

The laptop's screen goes completely blank for about a second or two whenever I switch between Battery Power and AC Power or vice versa and immediately turns back on.

Is it because of some hardware manufacturing defect or it's normal for HP Probook series laptops ?

I tried looking at different Battery settings under Power options in Control Panel, but could not find any answers for screen going completely blank (Dimming is understandable, but going totally blank for a second ???)

I used a Dell laptop for 5 years before buying this HP and never had screen going completely blank (not dimming, dimming is ok while on Battery to save power) when switching between battery and AC power.

Please give your expert advice.  Thanks a ton ...

to be honest i'd take it back seeing how it's so new and ask for a replacement, far as i'm aware no the screen shouldn't cut off when switching power source from/to battery.

saying that tho after a quick google search i did find this http://superuser.com...ving-power-cord

that seems to suggest it is an os/driver problem of some type with win 8.1 (i assume you've just upgraded yours from win 8 to 8.1 too.)

I had the same problem (screen turning off when unplugging my laptop from the power). It started two days after I upgraded to Windows 8.1.

I resolved this by using the Power Options control panel. I noticed that this problem only occurred for me when using the "balanced" power profile. If I switched to either the "power saver" or "high performance" profile, the problem went away.

I fixed this for the "balanced" profile by selecting "change plan settings..." and clicking "restore default power settings for this plan." I can now use the "balanced" profile without the problem reoccurring. There must be some specific setting that is causing this behavior, but I'm not sure what it is.

so probably nothing hardware related or anything to worry about, but i think i'd still take it back to the shop if the above doesn't fix the problem.
