Hi OCD, Sorry, I have been busy these few days. Run ESET with Administartor Rights ? I ran it in Administartor account, is that what you mean? It still didn't run properly. Anyway, I have ran TFC as you told. My laptop seem to running normal, because I don't see any other unusual stuff happened. So my laptop is clear? Edd12
Hi Edd12,

Run ESET with Administrator Rights ? I ran it in Administrator account, is that what you mean?

Unfortunately no, that is not the same thing. Please try again.

You need to run your browser with Administrator Rights, to do so right click your browsers short cut and select "Run as Administrator".

*Note:
  • It is recommended to disable on-board antivirus program and anti-spyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
  • Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
  • Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your anti-spyware programs.
Go here to run an online scanner from
ESET

(Note: You can use Internet Explorer or FireFox for this scan. If you use FireFox you will be asked to install an additional component. Please allow this.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • When the scan completes, click List of found threats
  • click Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan.
  • Include the contents of this report in your next reply

Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
  • Push the back button.
  • Push Finish
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
In your next post please provide the following:
  • ESET's log.txt
  • Any remaining issues?
Hi OCD, I have ran the Internet Explorer (64-bits) with Adminstrator rights (Run as Administrator selected). It seems to run normally this time, no oversize text. For the result, no threats were found. But I don't see a buttom called List of found threats, maybe it is due to no threat were found in this scan. All I could do was to exit the window, Well, at this point, I don't see any unusual stuff happened. I assume my laptop is clear now? :woot: Edd12
Hi Edd12,

Your computer appears to be clean. :) We have a few items to take care of before we get to the All Clean Speech.

Clean up with OTL:
  • Right-click OTL.exe select "Run as Administrator" to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but I can not give you any absolute guarantees. As a precaution, I would go ahead and change all of your passwords as this is especially important after an infection.

Any of the logs that you created for use in the forums or remaining tools that have not yet been removed can be deleted so they aren't cluttering up your desktop.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
Make your Mozilla Firefox more secure - This can be done by adding these add-ons:
Use and update an anti-virus software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

Free Anti-Virus
  • Avast Free Antivirus
  • Avira Free Antivirus 2013
  • PC Tools AntiVirus Free
  • Ad-Aware Free Antivirus +
Free Firewall
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on firewalls can be found here.
  • Online Armor Free
  • Agnitum Outpost Firewall Free
  • Comodo Firewall
Make sure you keep your Windows OS current. Windows XP users can visit Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Windows Vista/7 users can open the Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for Updates (in left hand task pane) to update these systems. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers. For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

WOT (Web of Trust) As "Googling" is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites. WOT has an add-on available for Firefox, Internet Explorer as well as Google Chrome.

Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.[
Hi OCD, I got a bad news . After the ESET scan, I browsed some job searching websites (which I consider them to be safe websites, because I browsed them a lot before and hadn't had any problem). Then I hibenated my latop. When I turned it back on, I found my Norton has lost their logos and some colours. I think my laptop are going weird now after this infection, :( I have restarted the laptop and also tried TFC, but didn't help. 📎norton1.jpg 📎norton2.png
Hi Edd12,

Do you have Norton disks to perform a reinstall?

If so, please continue. If not let me know.

Hi oldman960, I have used the tool you provided to uninstall norton and download the installation files from norton's website for reinstallation. Logoes and colors are back. Do you know what cause the logo and color missing? Was it caused by ESET scan? My norton was alright before that scan. Edd12
Hi Edd12

Do you know what cause the logo and color missing? Was it caused by ESET scan?

During the removal of malware it is possible for some files to become corrupt, which in turn may cause the software to not function as it normally would. I don't believe the ESET scan caused this issue.

Are there any remaining issues we haven't addressed?
Hi OCD, My video card seems to not working properly when I browse multiple websites or videos from website (not browsing them all at same time but multiple tabs or windows ). The screen would suddenly freeze when you open an additional website, sometimes it can recover by itself otherwise it would go to blue screen (says something about 'dumping memory') and restart the laptop itself. Not sure if this is related to malware. But it happens before this infection. So maybe it is not relate to this infecion. My laptop is running i7 2.30 GHz , 12gb ram ad video card is AMD Radeon HD7670M. So I assume it is more than capable of running multiple videos from websites. Other than this, I have no other issues. Thanks Followings are the problem history from Action center which shows the video problem on 23/4 and 26/3 📎video_error_23_4.jpg 📎video_error_26_3__1_.jpg 📎video_error_26_3__2_.jpg 📎video_error_26_3__3_.jpg 📎video_error_26_3__4_.jpg Edd12
Hi Edd12,

My laptop is running i7 2.30 GHz , 12gb ram ad video card is AMD Radeon HD7670M. So I assume it is more than capable of running multiple videos from websites.

It might not be so much the specs for your video card (12 GB), then the specs for the computer's processor (2.30 GHz). It just might not be up to running multiple videos. It really shouldn't matter if you are using multiple tabs or separate windows. The computer only has a finite amount of resources with which to accomplish all the tasks requested at any given time.

Here are a few examples of how an i7 2.3 GHz system stacks up against other i7 machines:

  • Click Start, in the dialog box type "dxdiag" (without quotes)
  • Next select Dxdiag.exe from the menu on the left (right click and select "Run as Administrator")
  • Click Yes on the UAC.
  • Click the Display tab, click the Save All Information button
  • Save the DxDiag.txt file to your desktop, post in your next reply

Another suggestion is to make sure your video card drivers are up to date, and see if that changes the performance.

In your next post please provide the following:

Hi OCD,

Oops, I have made a mistake. I was trying to say 'My laptop is running i7 2.30 GHz (3610QM) and it has 12GB insalled memory (ram) and video card is AMD Radeon HD7670M (2GB) :P

I have browsed the links you provide. I understand that other newer versions of CPU have better performace than mine. But for CPU of laptops in Australia, i7 2.30 GHz (3610QM) is already the second best CPU.

•DxDiag.txt is attached with WHQL digital signiture checked

Hi Edd12,

We have removed all the malware from your machine. I cannot find any links to specific problems with your video card, or your processor in general. The DxDiag log showed no problems found. Although your processor doesn't rank at the bottom in performance, you may still be taxing the system with what you are trying to accomplish at any given time.

With that in mind I'm going to refer you to our Tech Team in the General Hardware Forum

Give a brief description of the problem along with a link to this thread so the Tech Team helper can see what we have done already.

Hi OCD, Thanks a lot for all those advices from previous posts. They were helpful. I will go ahead to get help from Tech team. But just one last thing, I opened a link from a website in new tab, but at the same time, an additional window will pop up displaying the homepage (google is the homepage for my IE). Just want to confirm that this is not related to virus, spyware or malware, beause I have experienced this few time but not before this infection. Technical problem also? Again, thanks a lot. Edd12
Hi Edd12,

It is most likely not related to malware, although the infection you had may have affected some settings.

I have included instructions for both Internet Explorer & Firefox. Check the results after each step. If the problem is corrected you don't need to continue with the remainder of the steps. If the problem only occurs in a particular browser there is no need to reset the unaffected browser.

Flush the Internet Explorer Cache
  • In Internet Explorer, click Tools
  • Select Internet Options
  • Now on the General tab and click Delete Files and select Delete all Offline content too
  • Click OK.
  • When it finishes Click OK.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

To Reset Internet Explorer Settings
  • Close all Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows that are currently open.
  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click the Tools button [external image: Posted Image], and then click Internet Options.
  • Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.
  • Select the Delete personal settings check box if you would also like to remove browsing history, search providers, Accelerators, home pages, Tracking Protection, and ActiveX Filtering data.
  • In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
  • When Internet Explorer finishes applying default settings, click Close, and then click OK.
  • Close Internet Explorer.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Flush the FireFox Cache
  • In Firefox, click Tools
  • Select Options
  • Select Privacy
  • In the section labeled Private Data click Clear Now
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reset Firefox to its default state
  • At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the Help sub-menu
(on Windows XP, click the Help menu at the top of the Firefox window) and select Troubleshooting Information.
    [external image: Posted Image]

  • Click the Reset Firefox button in the upper-right corner of the Troubleshooting Information page.
    [external image: Posted Image]

  • To continue, click Reset Firefox in the confirmation window that opens.
  • Firefox will close and be reset. When it's done, a window will list the information that was imported. Click Finish and Firefox will open.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot

Check the results of the above steps.
Hi OCD,

Thanks for replying me. :) This window poping up issue doesn't happen alot, just few times. That was why I was feeling a liitle bit suspicous. :P

By the way. on the General tab, I can only find a Delete button, but there is no Delete all Offline content for me to select after I clicked this button It has something like Preserve Favourites website data, Temporary Internet files, Cookies, History, Downloaded history, Form data, Passwords and ActiveX Filtering and Tracking Protection data. I am using IE 9.
