Hi experts,

It has a screen comes up when you start your computer saying that you need to send money to unlock your computer.

Here is picture of what I got when I start my computer normally - http://community.norton.com/t5/Tech-Outpos…sie/td-p/816018

Can you offer me some helps to remove this thing? Instruction from Norton to remove FBI Moneypak virus using Norton Power Eraser didn't work on my situation, the problem is that I can't even log in to safe mode with networking to download or run NPE, because it would automatically log off when you tried to log in. I have also tried Norton bootable recovery tool last night, it couldn't detect any threats at all with a current definition (30 March 2013).

I am suprised that Norton 360 couldn't even block this virus initially. Any help will be much appreciated~~

Hello Edd12,

My name is OCD. I would be more than happy to help you with solving any malware problems you might have. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and know that I am working hard to get you a clean and functional system back in your hands. I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advice, this will be a team effort. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible. Please bear with me, I will post back to you as soon as I can.
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete, download or install anything unless instructed to do so.

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix or HijackThis fixes without supervision. Doing so could make your system inoperable and could require a full reinstall of your Operating System and losing all your programs and data.

Important Note for Vista and Windows 7 users:

These tools MUST be run from the executable.(.exe) every time you run them with Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Please stay with this topic until I let you know that your system appears to be "All Clear"
Hi Edd12,

Print out these instructions as we may need to close every window that is open later in the fix.

It is possible that the infection we are trying to remove will not allow you to download files on the infected computer. You will need to download the files requested in this guide on another computer and then transfer them to the infected computer. You will need a flash drive, or USB flash drive to complete these steps.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 32-Bit or Farbar Recovery Scan Tool 64-Bit and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.
To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

[*]Select Command Prompt

[*]In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.

[*]The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.

[*]Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.

[*]In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter

Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
[*]The tool will start to run.

[*]When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

[*]Press Scan button.

[*]It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

In your next post please provide the following:
  • FRST.txt
Hi OCD,

Sorry for taking so long to reply, I would like to say thank you to these great advises you have given me. Due to gap between the timezones and I was eager to get rid of this ransomware, I gave a tried on a FBI moneypak removal guide from a website. The ransomware seem to have been removed from computer because I don't see the screen comes up when I login to my account. Nevertheless, one of the procedure from the guide I was not able to follow and my scan result seem to differ from what the guide shows. So I assume there is little difference between AFP Ukash and FBI moneypak.

Could you guide me to check my computer to make sure there is no residue of this virus?

Followings were the procedures to remove AFP Ukash:

- I was first managed to get into Safe Mode wih Command Prompt
- typed explorer.exe to get the destop appears
- Then, I plugged the USB drive and tried to transfer EmsisoftEmergencyKit files from the drive to infected computer, unfortunately, USB drive icon didn't show up in My computer
- Then I tried to use a blank DVD disc to transfer the files, and it works. I was able extract the files to the computer and proceed the scan.
- I have got 1 high risk infection for the scan results, the guide shows there should be 4 infection
- the guide says there to press Quarantine select objects instead of pressig Delete selected objects. I pressed quarantine. Just wonder why quarantine instead of deleting it? So that means the virus is still in my computer, but just being kept in a safe place?

Hi Edd12,

Download aswMBR.exe and save it to your desktop.

Right click and select "Run as Administrator".
  • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
  • Click Scan
  • Upon completion of the scan, click Save log and save it to your desktop, and post that log in your next reply for review. Note - do NOT attempt any Fix yet.
  • You will also notice another file created on the desktop named MBR.dat. Right click that file and select Send To>Compressed (zipped) file. Attach that zipped file in your next reply as well.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Download OTL to your desktop.

Right click and select "Run as Administrator".
  • Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under Custom Scan paste this in

    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    services.exe
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /rp /s
    %systemdrive%\$Recycle.Bin|@;true;true;true
    %USERPROFILE%\..|smtmp;true;true;true /FP
    %temp%\smtmp\*.* /s >
    BASESERVICES
    DRIVES
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt.
Note:These logs can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if they fail to open automatically.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply. You may need two posts to fit them both in.
In your next post please provide the following:
  • aswMBR.txt
  • attachMBR.zip
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
  • Describe any symptoms you might be having.

For Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, the last few procedures I couldn't follow. When the scan is complete, there was no buttom to press OK and Show Results, as well as the Removed selected. The log just pop out automatically.

Maybe Eset Online Scanner is not compatible to my computer or Internet explorer. I pressed run Eset Online Scanner from the website you gave it to me. It pop out a small window with oversize Terms Of Use, and it didn't allow me to scroll down. With few refreshes, it was better but still little oversize, but at least it was small enough to let me press the Yes buttom. I went through all the preocedures you told. When the scan finished, I didn't see the Detailed tab buttom anywhere in the window. And the consequence of this scan is that I couldn't open My computer, it is not responding! I can still see the window of My computer but just a blank window (no drives nothing), when you tried to close it. It would say Windows Explorer is not responding and choose between Restart program, close program or Wait for the program to respond. I can sometimes open My computer, but it delays severly!!

OCD, Not sure my last message made sense to you. Excuse my english skill. I am here to clarify. I said 'I couldn't open My computer', I was actually saying I couldn't go into Computer from the Start menu. Everything was alright initially, but not after the ESET scan. Computer was then not responding when I clicked it (small windows pop up saying that Windows exploerer not responding rather than Computer not responding) or took long time to load the window. I have tied many times, result were the same. I turned off my firewall and anti-virus while having the ESET scan, because the ESET website detected them and said they would potentially interfere the scan. 0 threats were found from the scan. I couldn't generate the log as you told, because there were no such buttom to press. But then I tried to go into program files from Computer to check if there was a log in the folder, the not responding thing started to occur. Therefore, I restarted the laptop, the not responding issue disappeared. My laptop is running i-core 7 and 12gb memory. I am sure the problem was not caused by the laptop itself. Maybe Eset Online Scanner or its website or maybe the Malwarebyte Anti-Malware caused this issue? Does these mean anything to you? Anyway, here is he FRST.log Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) (x64) Version: 13-03-2013 (ATTENTION: FRST version is 27 days old) Ran by [removed] at 09-04-2013 21:06:15 Running from F:\ Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (X64) OS Language: English(US) The current controlset is ControlSet001 ==================== Registry (Whitelisted) =================== HKLM\…\Run: [] [x] HKLM\…\Run: [RtHDVCpl] C:\Program Files\Realtek\Audio\HDA\RAVCpl64.exe -s [12459112 2012-03-15] (Realtek Semiconductor) HKLM\…\Run: [SRS Premium Sound HD] "C:\Program Files\SRS Labs\SRS Control Panel\SRSPanel_64.exe" /f="C:\Program Files\SRS Labs\SRS Control Panel\SRS_Premium_Sound_HD.zip" /h [223180 2012-03-22] () HKLM\…\Run: [SynTPEnh] %ProgramFiles%\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe [2866960 2011-12-19] (Synaptics Incorporated) HKLM\…\Run: [TPwrMain] %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\Power Saver\TPwrMain.EXE [590256 2011-09-22] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TCrdMain] %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\FlashCards\TCrdMain.exe [989056 2011-12-13] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [Teco] "%ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\TECO\Teco.exe" /r [1548208 2011-11-24] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TosWaitSrv] %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\TPHM\TosWaitSrv.exe [712096 2011-12-14] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TPSCMain] %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\PeakShift\TPSCMain.exe [740792 2011-12-20] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TosSENotify] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA HDD SSD Alert\TosWaitSrv.exe [710560 2011-11-25] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TosVolRegulator] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TosVolRegulator\TosVolRegulator.exe [24376 2009-11-11] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TosNC] %ProgramFiles%\Toshiba\BulletinBoard\TosNcCore.exe [598448 2011-06-28] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [TosReelTimeMonitor] %ProgramFiles%\TOSHIBA\ReelTime\TosReelTimeMonitor.exe [38824 2011-06-28] (TOSHIBA Corporation) HKLM\…\Run: [AdobeAAMUpdater-1.0] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\OOBE\PDApp\UWA\UpdaterStartupUtility.exe" [446392 2012-04-03] (Adobe Systems Incorporated) HKLM-x32\…\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 10.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe" [38112 2012-12-18] (Adobe Systems Incorporated) HKLM-x32\…\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe" [946352 2012-12-02] (Adobe Systems Incorporated) HKLM-x32\…\Run: [StartCCC] "C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static\CLIStart.exe" MSRun [343168 2012-01-20] (Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.) Hi Edd12,

The explanation of the problems you are encountering have been just fine.

Maybe Eset Online Scanner or its website or maybe the Malwarebyte Anti-Malware caused this issue? Does these mean anything to you?

I don't think there are any known issues with either ESET or MBAM that would have generated the issues you encountered. With that being said ESET does require that it be run with Administrator Rights and I did not include those instructions in my last request. Failing to run ESET with Administartor Rights could lead to problems with the program not running as intended.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
In your next post please provide the following:
  • How is the computer running, any remaining issues?
