windows 7 64 home premium, hangs, programs not responding, hard drive

hard drive activity led full on no flickering
happens with several programs, if I can get task manager open it shows cpu activity 0 or 1, internet usually works if I have not opened any other programs first, usually have to hold power button for shutdown once it hangs.
Have done disk clean and defrag recently, microsoft security essentials will only run a few seconds then hangs, disk chk showed no problems.
