I want to connect 2 PCs to my Dell U2412M monitor, one to the DVI-D input and the other to the VGA (with both PCs running) and use the monitor's on-screen menu to choose which input source is displayed. Does this (having two "live" inputs connected at the same time) pose any danger to the monitor? This seemed a good idea because KVM switches with DVI are at least 3x as expensive as the ones with VGA connectors but I want at least one of the PCs to benefit from the digital connection. Plus I don't know if there even is such a thing as a KVM switch that can handle both DVI-D and VGA outputs.
from my understanding, the monitors with dual inputs are usually designed to safely have both connected at once. i've never done it myself, and i don't own a dual input display to test it out for you, but i don't see a problem with doing what your wanting and connecting both pc's then using the monitor to switch between each pc display. but for a definite yes it's safe answer we'd need the make and model of the monitor in question to check out it's specs. oops missed "Dell U2412M monitor" just off to check it out for you. answer is yes. you can safely connect 2 different pc's to the monitor each using one of the input ports, dvi or vga and switch between both using the monitor.
