Hi chiro.j.elliott,
I wanted you to be happy with the back up before we started our work here….. I hope it won't be necessary for you to reinstall Windows and all the applications and then set up everything again, and copy over all docs and photos etc…..as this is usually a fairly drastic step to take, and often the problems can be sorted out by less severe means…… However its always better to be safe than sorry…
The Recovery Partition is useful all the time the hard drive is OK…if the hard drive is unservicable its unlikely to be of much assistance, without a new hard drive and a good disc image. (see below)
If you don't have any discs and cant' find a friend that you could borrow one from, then its worth while using a disc imaging application to try and make a disc image of the Recovery Partition at least…..together with a bootable CD that will enable the computer to boot and access the disc image so that the Recovery Partition can be used.
Paid for disc imaging products are available from Acronis, Paragon, Symantec etc., (I tend to use Acronis as its quite good)….
and free versions available from here:
http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml
Macrium has a good reputation.
Having a disc image (verified for accuracy and kept safe on removable media) of the Recovery Partition would be an excellent "insurance" against troubles that could arise in the future that cannot be dealt with satisfactorily in a timely or cost effective way by the usual means, and would enable the computer to be set back to its original or "Factory" state.
So if you are happy that you have done everything you can to back up and create the disc image then, lets go:
1 Please download and install the Windows All in One repair tool (3.91Mb) from here:
http://www.tweaking.com/content/page/windo…all_in_one.html
2 When its installed please go directly to Step 2 (don't go to Step 1, as this step must be left alone, in this situation!)
3 Perform all the steps 2 through to 4
4 At Step 4 please create both the System Restore Point and the Erunt Registry back up……(more "insurance"!)
5 Click on "Start Repairs" tab
6 Click "Custom" and put a tick/checkmark in "Select All"
Click Start (Do not tick or checkmark… "Restart Computer")
As we are using an unusually "broad brush" approach here by using all the available repair tools within this application, the repairs may take some time.
Various DOS type windows will open and close (this is normal)
When you are sure it has finished its various tasks, then please test your machine for an hour or two without rebooting it….
Next fingers crossed and close down in the normal way…wait 30 seconds with a blank black screen and then restart (reboot) your computer, wait 5 minutes (by the clock, not a second earlier!) and then test some more…..
Please report back any error or codes that you see….
If you receive an error when trying to run steps 2 through to 4 because the Step won't run, it indicates serious problems with your computer have been encountered and you will need to make a judgement if you want to miss out a particular step, and proceed to the final "Start Repairs" tab
If you feel that missing one of the steps is unacceptable then it's vital that the Windows Installation disc is found or one obtained (and it must be the corrrect one)
Regards
