I have an XP Pro (slash) Media Center. IMy house burned down last year and I purchased this PC from a large local established computer shop. Unfortunately with the economy and death in their family issues, they closed making me their last job. Phones disconnected and everything. I have spent about 45 hours since trying to find the answer to my dilemma (below)….I post in forums that never answer or give me way wrong answers, and at one point early on, I had to (already) do the recovery console to fix some errant info. I sure hope you can help. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ok here we go: Right after I see the Gateway boot screen, I get a prompt Silicon Image Sil 0680 ATA-133 Medley Raid at first boot of the day, it sits there for about 10 min. before moving on. BUT every so often, it just…..sits…..there for up to 20 min. or my patience running out, whichever comes first HAHA If I just shut her down quick and reboot, it moves right thru the next (after reboot) prompt. I don't know why they gave me this Raid "thingy", I already had one of the fabulous SATA cable USB drive gadgets for hooking up externally my old hard drives and moving info back and forth. PLEASE I have never been in the BIOS,etc.etc., am pretty savvy altho on many many computer issues, just don't know the steps to take to rid myself of this dang prompt. Thanks for hanging in there and list'ning!
If this is a Gateway computer, you should post the model number, please. Has the computer been modified? Do you know any specs about it? Hard drive size and type? Multiple hard drives? CD/DVD drives? How many? What type? SATA or IDE?
having to work a double shift today, will catch up anything else you need tomorrow, thanks appleoddity :) :) Uncertain of modifications by them, have extensive info if you need just let me know :) Gateway 840GM Intel D Pentium Processor 830 Double Layer 16x multiformat DVDRW and 16x DVD Drives Intel 945G chipset 3 Firewire, 7 USB Ports 8-in-1 Digital Memory Card Reader OS: Name Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 Features Terminal Services in Remote Admin Mode, Media Center Edition, Multiprocessor Free, OEM-Version Activation Status Activated Checked Build No Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1 System Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1 Kernel Version 5.1.2600.6165 Security 128 bits, 40 bits Product Name Microsoft Windows XP Build Lab 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.111025-1629 Hardware DEP Available Yes DEP for 32 Bits Applications Yes DEP for Drivers Yes DEP Policy OptOut (enabled by default for all processes) Windows Update's version number 7.4.7600.226 Automatic Updates Notify me but don't automatically download or install them Scheduled Install Every Day @ 3:00 AM Sy Motherboard: Manufacturer Intel Corporation Model D945GBI Version AAC99325-202 Serial Number AZBI52405043 North Bridge Intel i945P/PL/G/GZ Revision A2 South Bridge Intel 82801GB (ICH7/R) Revision A2 CPU Intel® Pentium® D CPU 3.00GHz Cpu Socket Socket 775 LGA System Slots 4 PCI Memory Summary Maximum Capacity 4096 MBytes Memory Slots 4 Error Correction None Warning! Well, it appears this computer never came with a Silicon Image RAID controller.

It raises the question as to WHY it is even in the computer.

You have a SATA hard drive which clearly plugs into the motherboard. The two CD/DVD drives are IDE and they need to plug in somewhere. The motherboard has an IDE port they can plug into. Possibly this port has been damaged, or is not functional, and they added the IDE RAID card as a simple device to plug the CD/DVD drives into.

My guess is, there is nothing wrong with the motherboard, and the RAID controller just simply doesn't belong in your machine.

Turn off your computer.

Remove the case off your computer - http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/3726/3726faq15.shtml

Identify the Silicon Image RAID card:

[external image: Posted Image]

See if any cables are plugged into the RED or BLUE IDE slots. If not, remove the Silicon Image RAID card following the instructions for remove other expansion cards as found here: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/4055/4055faq5.shtml

If a cable is plugged into it, trace the path of the cable and see if it connects to the back of your two cd/dvd drives. If it does, you may try to unplug the cable from the Silicon Image RAID card then plug it into the IDE port located on the motherboard which is the white connector located behind and slightly above the purple parallel port as showin in the picture below.

[external image: Posted Image]

The port should be keyed, meaning the cable can only plug in one way.

Remove the Silicion Image RAID card and power your computer back up.

It should be able to boot, but your CD/DVD drives might not show up in windows. If not, you may need to go into the system BIOS and enable the onboard IDE controller. However, your information above seems to show that the onboard IDE port is already enabled. These name brand machines typically have very simple BIOSes with very little options, so it shouldn't be hard to find. Once the port is enabled, boot the computer back up and see if the CD/DVD drives are present. If you've done everything correctly you should have eliminated the Silicon Image problem. I have no information about the BIOS configuration options on this computer, you'll have to figure that out on your own by looking.
