Hi,

I have a Dell XPS. Not quite a year old yet. System has always been very fast. In recent weeks it has occassionally become very, very slow at power up. Sometimes taking as long as 5-10 minutes to do so whereas it used to take less than a minute from power up to logging in. I am attaching my HiJack This log here. Could you please let me know if I've picked up some virus, trojan, or some other issue? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello tx_hawkeye,

Welcome to the What the Tech Virus, Spyware, and Malware Removal Forum. My name is Troy and I will be assisting you with the malware issues on your computer.
Because I am still in training, all the advice I give must first be checked by an instructor, therefore there may be some delays in my replies.

A few things before we get started
  • If you have not already done so Please read these forum rules.
  • Please be aware that removing malware is not without risk and while unrecoverable damage to systems is rare, it can happen and require a re-format and re-install of your operating system. Because of this it is a good idea to back-up anything important saved on your computer.
  • Any fixes I may post will be specific to your computer and should not be used on other computers.
  • While we work on your computer please don't install any new programs, try any other fixes, or run any tools other than those requested.
  • If at any time my instructions are not clear please ask before proceeding.
  • Failure to respond within 3 days will result in this topic being closed - If you need more time to complete the steps required, please let me know.

Step 1
Scan with DDS
  • Please download DDS … by sUBs. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download links here or here.
  • Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  • Right click dds.com and select "Run as Administrator" to run the tool. (File name will be different if alternate download used).
A black window will open with some instructions/comments…
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
Caution: The above logs will NOT be saved… you must save them to your desktop.
  • Please post both logs in your next reply.

Have you noticed any other changes in your computer's behavior?
Hi Troy….thanks for your response. I have downloaded DDS.com and placed on my desktop. However, when I right-click it there is no selection to "Run as Administrator". What I do see as selection from the right-click is: - Open - Share with…. - Restore previous versions - Send to…. - Cut - Copy - Create shortcut - Delete - Rename - Properties In response to your other question….no, other than the slowness I've seen no other issues. There have been no redirects or anything. Just slow on boot up and occassionally a delayed response when I click on something….almost as if the click wasn't registered by the system.
Hi tx_hawkeye,

I apologise for the long delay in response.

There was a mistake in my DDS instructions. There is no need for DDS to run as administrator. Simply double click the file to run it. See new instructions below.

Step 1
Create a System Restore Point
  • Click on Start … Right-click on Computer … select Properties.
  • In the left pane click System protection.
If UAC prompts for an administrator password or approval, type the password or give your "permission to continue".
  • Select System Protection …then choose Create.
  • In the System Restore dialog box, type a description for the restore point … click Create, again.
A window will pop up with "The Restore Point was created successfully" confirmation message.
  • Click OK …then close the System Restore dialog.
If you do not see the message The Restore Point was created successfully DO NOT continue post back here to let me know.
Please leave the System Restore function "turned on" until we are finished and I give you the 'all clean' sign.

Step 2
Scan with DDS
  • Please download DDS … by sUBs. Save it to your desktop. Alternate download links here or here.
  • Disable any script blocking software you have running before running DDS.
  • Double click dds.com to run the tool.

Step 3
TDSSKiller
Please download the TDSSKiller.exe by Kaspersky… save it to your Desktop. Note: It is VERY IMPORTANT to run this from your desktop.
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
If TDSSKiller does not run… rename it. Right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. abc123.com).
  • Click the Start Scan button. Do not use the computer during the scan!
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If any suspicious or malicious objects are detected ensure Skip is selected then click Continue. Do not attempt to fix anything yet!
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_dd.mm.yyyy_hh.mm.ss_log.txt will be created and saved to the root directory. (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply
  • Any problems with the instructions above?
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • TDSS log
Hi Troy,

Thanks again.

Per your request, including the following in this reply:

1) Any problems with the instructions above?
- No, they were clear to me.

2) DDS.txt - here is the content of the DDS.txt:

4) TDSS log - There was no log as the scan was clean and found no threats

Thanks again for your help. I look forward to your next reply…
Hi tx_hawkeye,

Step 2
No Anti-Virus!
It is extremely important to keep one up to date Anti-Virus program running on your computer.
I personally recommend one of these free programs.

Installing new Anti-Virus Software
  • Download the new Anti-virus product to your computer desktop.
  • Save any work. Close all applications, especially your Internet connection.
  • Install the new AV product… following installation instructions.
  • Check for updates to the new AV product, if not done during install setup.
  • Run a full scan of your computer.

Your DDS logs are ahowing a few minor items we will take care of shortly, but nothing that explains the symptoms you describe so we need to take a liitle deeper look.

Step 3
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder… and click Remove Selected.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Step 4
OTL
Please download OTL … by Old Timer . Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click on OTL.exeselect "Run as administrator" and allow it to run.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
Leave the remaining selections to the default settings.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <– Will be opened, maximized
    • Extras.txt <– Will be minimized on task bar.
  • Please post the contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.

Please include in your next reply:
  • Any problems with the instructions above.
  • Malwarebytes log
  • OTL.txt
  • Extras.txt
  • Any changes in the way your computer is behaving.

Troy
Per your request, including the following in my reply:

1) Any problems with the instructions above? - No, they were clear to me.

1a) Downloaded and ran the Avast anti-virus - scan indicated no threat found

2) How is your computer behaving now? - I've rebooted several times and the slow boot is still happening…and although its still taking several minutes it seems not to be taking AS long. As it has been, when I power up, after it displays the "Windows Startup" splash screen, the screen goes dark except for the arrow cursor and sits that way for 2-3 minutes before the screen displays which user to select to log in with (Administrator or Frank). This seems to be an improvement on the 5-10 minutes it was taking but is still a far cry from going directly to the user selection screen from the "Windows Startup" screen as it used to.
Hi tx_hawkeye,

Step 2
ESET NOD32 Online Scan
You will need to to right-click on the IE or FF icons on the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download "esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe" when prompted… then double click on it to install.

Please temporarily disable your Anti-virus real-time protection. If active, it could impact the online scan.
Please go to ESET Online Scanner - © ESET All Rights Reserved… to run an online scan.
** Make sure you are using an account that has Administrative privileges **
  • Press the "ESET Online Scanner" button.
  • Check the box next to "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click "Start"… a window will open… it may appear nothing is happening… please be patient.
  • Click Yes… at the run ActiveX prompt. Click Install… at the install ActiveX prompt.
Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  • Click "Start". Make sure that the options:
  • Remove found threats is UNCHECKED
  • Leave the "default" settings under Advanced as they are, if not set , please check:
  • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
  • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
  • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
[*]Click "Start"… ESET scanner will begin to download the virus signatures database.

When the signatures have been downloaded, the scan will start automatically.
[*]Wait for the scan to finish… it may take a while… please be patient. When the scan is finished…

[*]Use Notepad to open the log file located at C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

[*]Copy and paste the contents of log.txt in your next reply.

**Remember to enable your Anti-virus protection… before continuing!

Please include in your next reply:
  • ESET log
  • Any changes in your computer's behavior
