It would seem that one or more viruses or malware are in my computer. My avg scan is not showing this. I ran malwarebytes and it handled two infections.
However, currently my virus protection - AVG 2012 is turned off and I am unable to turn it on. Also, there are pop-ups appearing, I am having some problems with Open Office, and the computer will not complete the shut down process. (Will go through the process; however, I have to manually push the off button to turn it off.
Can you help me?
Thank you!
Hello,
Welcome toWhatTheTech. My name is mowman, and I will be helping you fix your problems.
If you do not make a reply in 3 days, we will have to close your topic.
You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favorites. Alternatively, you can click the Options button at the top bar of this topic and Track this topic. The topics you are tracking can be found by clicking on My Topics at the top of any page.
Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
•Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
•If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
•Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
•Please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply.
Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post
I have been having difficulty logging in to this forum for the past two days. Have finally solved this.
I sent all logs to you yesterday via the WhattheTech Contact form, requesting that someone get in touch with you, as I did not know of any other way to do so. At the time I also requested help with logging in.
I will now post the results of my scans. Re: rootkit —–
Results from first segment:
(Report that came up after scan said that it found 1 infected file; 2 cured.
Thank you.

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
Remember to re-enable them when we're done.
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
[external image: Posted Image]
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
Mowman,
Busy last few days. My intuition is telling me that it would be a good idea to run OTL again, as it was last run on: 11/16 (I sent you these results).
I now should be able to move ahead - right through your protocol - with no further interruptions, once OTL is completed.
I did run TDSS killer a few moments ago. All clear. No infections.
As I recall, there was a yellow/black OTL icon on my desktop at the time I ran this program.
However, it is currently not appearing.
I do have an another OTL icon on the desktop - beginning:
**
OTL logfile created on: 11/16/2011 10:36:05 PM - Run 1
OTL by OldTimer - Version 3.2.31.0 Folder = C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop
Windows XP Professional Edition Service Pack 3 (Version = 5.1.2600) - Type = NTWorkstation
Internet Explorer (Version = 8.0.6001.18702)
Locale: 00000409 | Country: United States | Language: ENU | Date Format: M/d/yyyy
**
That is a notepad file only, however.
To summarize: I wish to run OTL again, but do not know how to do so.
Please advise.
Thank you.
P.S. I have not yet downloaded saved ComboFix.exe to my Desktop
Mowman,
Just wanted to add a symptom that I did not mention in my initial "contact email" to WTT.
When I go to view installed printers - my printer does not show up.
Thanks.
I'll be happy to do so.
My question is - since my anti-virus software has been down and I have needed to be online (prior to, and since running OTL on the 16th) - why do you believe that the system has not been reinfected?
I'm not confidant about this, and will await your reply before moving ahead.

It may or may not have, but a Combofix log gives me the same information as OTL but in a different way,and also removes infections. That is why we cannot proceed further without running it.
