This is a re-post of the first post of the same name.

I reposted it as I had originally misread the instructions and thought that I was supposed to use the 3 tools of OTL, HiJackThis, and DDS instead of selecting only one.

Consequently I ended making 2 more posts to include all the logs.

I further read later NOT to add more posts as the techs are looking for posts that have 0 more posts added to it.

Therefor, I am reposting this with only the logs from OTL.

Desktop icons disappeared,
Startup items disappeared
When clicking on google results from google searches they go somewhere else.

I have run SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, and unhide.exe. Half of the icons came back, but not all.

  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop (applicable only to Zip mirror) .
  • Double click [external image: Posted Image] or [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    [external image: Posted Image]

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

Thank you so much for your help. When I run GMER I immediately get an error message: LoadDriver(C:\Docume~1\Bob\Local~1\Temp\pwtdqpow.sys") error )xC000010E: Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent key. After that it opens. In the right panel the only items not greyed-out are Services, Registry, Files and then lower ADS. I scanned it anyway. It ends up saying "GMER hasn't found any system modification.
Hi,

Did you use temporary file cleaner or similar prior to posting for help? Because if you do, chances for you to get back half of your missing icons is nearly impossible.

Please read carefully and follow these steps.
I don't know what you mean by "temporary file cleaner". I use Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Viprerescue, and unhider. By the way, The Kapersky opening screen (in tdsskiller) that you show with 2 checkmarks on it are not available on the one you had me download. Please read through these instructions to familarize yourself with what to expect when this tool runs

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs

    **********************************************
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
When I began running ComboFix it said that McAfee was running, but I couldn't see it in the taskbar on the right by the time, nor was it in the Program Menu, nor was it in Add/Remove in the Control Panel so I continued to run it.

Here's the log:

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

Passwords
It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them and consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles:
To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an add-on available for both Firefox and IE.

  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
  • Download Host.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click hosts.zip and select 'Extract all files' or 'Extract files…'.
  • Follow the prompts and click 'Finish'.
  • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
  • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
  • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
Follow this list and keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis. By doing so, your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck.

Do you have any questions or problems to ask? Please do not hesitate to do so.

**Please respond this one more time to ensure it is resolved and close this topic.
