sluggish & choppy performance, can't find problem

Computer boots up normally but soon afterwards begins to run sluggish and choppy. All video, whether from HD or the net is choppy, not fluent at all. Typing is even choppy, Word, notepad all the same. Even typing this is choppy. Openings tabs, scrolling, and switching pages on the net is sluggish. I can tell something has a hold of the system because the sound, the pitch of the computer itself, increases and gets a loud, whirring sound when this happens. It sounds as if it's processing to the max. I also have trouble with the Safely Remove Hardware button. I can have a thumb drive in that is not open in windows explorer and I'm not using but yet it won't let me remove it. I have run many different malware and anti-virus scanners. They don't find whatever is causing this because there's no improvement after running them. Hope you can help. Here's the HijackThis log. Thanks, argodan

Hello again argodan

Nothing much showing up there so we'll take a deeper look

First, please disable this program and leave it disabled until we are done.

SPYBOT TEATIMER• launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
• on the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
• uncheck the Resident TeaTimer (Protection of overall system settings) active box.
• click on the System Startup icon in the List
• uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and click OK at any prompts.
• if Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click Allow Change when prompted.
• exit Spybot S&D.
(When we are finished, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup).

===================================================

Run HijackThis

Open HijackThis and click Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: avgrsstarter - Invalid registry found

Close all windows except for HijackThis and click Fix checked.

===================================================

Run DDS

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

DDS.scr
DDS.pif

• disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
• double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
• when done, DDS.txt will open.
• after a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
• save both reports to your desktop.
• Post the contents of the DDS.txt and Attach.txt reports in your next reply
===================================================

Run aswMBR• download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop
• double click the aswMBR.exe to run it
• click the "Scan" button to start the scan
On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Logs to include with next post:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt
aswMBR log

Thanks

Hello Satchfan,

Last time I wrote to this forum it was known as Tom Coyote. My bookmark was still under that name.

Yesterday I remembered that my computer did a full reset/reboot about 3 or 4 times all by itself. This happened approx. 3 weeks ago. The time between the 1st and last reboot was 4 or 5 days. It hasn't done it since. However, I cannot associate that time frame with the time my current problem began. There was no similarity between what I was doing at the time when the reboots occurred.

Tea Timer has been disabled. Here are the scan results as requested:

Thanks for the help

argodan

Last time I wrote to this forum it was known as Tom Coyote. My bookmark was still under that name.

That was some time ago - before my time! :)

I see you are using two anti-viruses. Avast and Ad-aware(ad-aware now includes anti-virus protection). Having more than one anti-virus can cause conflicts with each other. I recommended to remove ad-aware.

I have to pop out now for a while but will look at your logs and reply later.

Satchfan
Satchfan' I am running Ad-Aware and Bit Defender for anti-virus. The Bit Defender is a paid program and I would prefer keeping that one. I am running the free version of Ad-Aware. I have read where running 2 can possibly cause conflict but this isn't something new. I've had both of them for several years now. It just happens that when running scans one might catch something the other misses so I run both. Not to say they are now finally disagreeing with one another. I'll uninstall Ad-Aware as you recommend. However, I am not running Avast as you mentioned. If you caught a mention of Avast in one of the log files, the only thing I can say is that the aswMBR you had me run requested loading the Avast AV definitions to run its scan, which I let it do. Thanks again, looking forward to next reply argodan
Hi argodan

Sorry to confuse you over the mention of Avast: my mistake. BitDefnder is the one I meant to recommend keeping.

Although you say you have had no problems, Ad-Aware some years ago had no antivirus component whereas it now has and far from catching one the other might miss, they can render each other ineffective and even pick each other up as “malware”. I’m glad you have done as I recommended.

Registry cleaners

I notice that you have Registry Mechanic on your system. It's not recommended to use of registry cleaners/boosters.

The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results". Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone.

===================================================

There is nothing in your logs to indicate a malware problem but we’ll run another couple of checks to be certain.

===================================================

Download Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware

Click here
  • double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • at the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish..
  • if an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • when the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • when removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • the log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
NOTE: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Run ESET Online Scan

Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

ESET OnlineScan 1. Click the Eset online Scanner button.
2. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)

• Click on esetinstaller.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
• Double click on the Eset installer icon on your desktop.

3. Check Yes, I accept the Terms of Use
4. Click the Start button.
5. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
6. Check Scan archives
7. Push the Start button.
8. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
9. When the scan completes, push List of found threats
10. Push Export to Text file and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
Note - when ESET doesn't find any threats, no report will be created.
11. Push the back button.
12. Push Finish
If a log has been produced post it in your next reply.

Satchfan
Hello Satchfan,

It's possible the Ad-Aware was the culprit. I noticed an improvement in performance immediately. As you mentioned the new addition of its AV component might be a problem with Bit Defender.

I ran the other scans as requested. MBAM and ESET both have a log. You weren't kidding about ESET taking time to run, 7hr. 50min., wow! Glad I didn't hang around for the results.

I haven't a clue what the 2 in MBAM mean. The 2 in ESET are from a program my son gave me a few months ago but my problem does not go back that far.

Videos in WMPlayer and Youtube are now playing fluent also.

Anything else?, Let me know.

Thanks,
argodan
Hi argodan

It's possible the Ad-Aware was the culprit

Yes, there doesn’t appear to be anything else of any consequence and the scans seemed to have done the trick clearing up little bits.

You do need to take note of a few things though to safeguard against infection.

Create a restore point

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Create restore point
  • click Start, Run then copy and paste the following into the run box:

    %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

  • press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next.
  • name it (something you'll remember) and click Create
  • when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.
Remove all previous Restore Points:
  • click Start, Run, then copy and paste the following into the run box:

    cleanmgr
  • choose to scan drive C:\ (if C:\ is your main drive). At the top, click on More Options tab. Click the Clean up button in the System Restore box.
  • click on the Yes button.
  • when finished, click on the Cancel button to exit.
===================================================

Firewall

You have no firewall.

Windows has a firewall but the main reason you should use a third-party firewall over the Windows XP Firewall is because Windows Firewall only stops incoming signals from accessing your computer. However, it will not stop Outgoing signals (possibly ones that could intrude your privacy) from sending information to the Internet or to other networks. That means if malware happens to compromise your PC again, it will be able to SEND OUT out your credit card data and any other personal information.

Download\install one of the following freeware firewalls from below:

Sygate Personal Firewall Free Edition:
Zone Alarm Free:
Comodo Personal Firewall:

NOTE only install one firewall. Having more than one could cause many programs to stop working altogether. Also, the firewalls may get in each others' way and cause some security holes that would not be there with just one firewall.

You should take the time to read Understanding and Using Firewalls

===================================================

Windows updates

I notice that Windows updates are waiting to be installed. Click here to get the latest Windows updates:

===================================================

Set your computer to automatically check for Windows updates.

To turn on Automatic Updates:
• Click Start, Settings and then click Control Panel.
• Double-click Automatic Updates.
• Choose Automatic (recommended).
===================================================

Make your Internet Explorer more secure 1 From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Internet Options.
2 Click on the Security tab
3 Click the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4 Click on Default Level and click Ok
5 Click on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

6 Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
===================================================

Recommended programs

  • Although Spybot Search & Destroy/Ad-Aware were good programs, they are not robust enough to deal with today’s intruders and infections. Spybot still gives real-time protection so I’d keep that but I suggest you replace Ad-Aware with the following free program:

    SpywareBlaster. SpywareBlaster blocks over 11,000 bad guys and sites and uses zero resources of your computer.

  • Update and run Malwarebytes. This really is an excellent program that you should update and run on a regular basis, probably weekly.
You can never update too often and your computer will not be protected from new malware if your programs are not up-to-date.

I also recommend that you read the following:

Safe computing

Satchfan
Hello Satchfan, Thanks for the detailed tune up list. I'll work on this in the next couple of days 'cause my schedule is hectic right now. Just a few questions in the meantime if you don't mind. Re: the firewall. I'm on a home network with 2 other computers. I understand the router has a firewall also, is this true? If not and I should still install one, which of your 3 recommendations would work the best on a network setup? I do share files with 1 of the other computers. My windows update notice just came since we've been chatting and I normally do keep that up to date. Re: Ad-Aware Free and Avast Free AV programs; Which of these do you feel the better program for the free user? Thanks, argodan (Argo is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.)
Hi argodan

Argo is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A

Being from the UK I wasn’t aware of its existence but you have now put it on the map. :)

=======================================================

Firewall

If your router has a firewall that is fine. However, if you have a laptop and are removing it from the network to use somewhere else, you’ll obviously need a firewall then.

=======================================================

Which would I recommend?

Until I had Windows 7, (which now has a good firewall of its own), I always used ZoneAlarm but that is just personal choice as they will all do a good job.

=======================================================

Antivirus

Re: Ad-Aware Free and Avast Free AV programs; Which of these do you feel the better program for the free user?

Of the two I would definitely choose Avast.

I would also recommend you consider the free Microsoft Security Essentials which can be downloaded from here.

Don’t forget to only install and run only ONE antivirus program at one time.
