I'm so sorry to keep you waiting so long. I finally downloaded ComboFix again. I renamed it Combo-Fix but it still didn't work and it keeps freezing my computer. Since you said something about redownloading and renaming it, I'm pretty sure I tried that last time, too. But it didn't work then either. I made sure I turned off my Firewall and Antivirus programs (and Spybot teatimer). Combo-Fix opened and said it was creating a restore point. Then a box with a blue screen opened(same as always). The computer made some noise(like it always does - like its processing data) for about a minute or so and then stopped. I let it sit there most of the afternoon(about 4-5 hours or so) but it never did anything. I went to try and close the Combo-Fix box but my computer was frozen, again. So I had to shut it down and restart it. I tried to run it a few times but it did the same thing every time. I don't know why ComboFix wont work on my computer.
Hi Candi7,

I hope you are now feeling better. :)

Hi Jeff, Thanks! Ya, I'm finally feeling better, thank you! I got a little busy today and its real late so I will try doing what you said tomorrow some time. Thanks again!
Hi Jeff, I restarted in safe mode with networking but I couldn't get online. Or as soon as I would get online it would either just close or say there was a problem and had to close. I kept trying and kept trying but I couldn't stay online in safe mode. I'm so sorry, its just one problem after another. Can't get anything to work right. ….. :wall:
Hi Candi7,

Sometimes removing malware can be quite an undertaking. Try not to get frustrated. :)smile.gif

Please do the following:

Hold down the Windows key and press R to open a run box
type the following text into the run box and then press Enter.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combo-fix.exe"

If ComboFix runs please post the log that it creates into the next reply.
Should I do this in regular mode or safe mode. I was going to try running Combo-Fix in safe mode but it doesn't show up on my desk top in safe mode. Do you think I still have malware? My scans have been clean ever since that one day. But it is weird how it was just that one day. Ok, I will try in regular mode since that's the only way I can get to it. Thanks!
Well, it didn't work. It did the same thing its been doing. It opened, created a restore point then it said it should only take about 10 minutes maybe twice as long for really bad infected machines. The computer made some noise(processing) for about a minute then it stopped and just sat there till a minute or so ago. I started it right after I wrote the last post and I let it sit there until about a minute ago. Probably around 3 hours it sat there. I don't know why my computer just doesn't want to run Combofix or Combo-Fix. The same thing happened the last time I had a problem(maybe 6 months or so) ago and I don't think we ever did get it to work. I'm not positive though. I thought we ended up using something else but I can't really remember.
Hi candi7,

Ok…let's give this a shot shall we?

Please do the following:

Hold down the Windows key and press R to open a run box
type the following text into the run box and then press Enter.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combo-fix.exe" /killall

If ComboFix runs please post the log that it creates into the next reply.
Well, I tried but, no good. It did the same thing as its been doing. I let it sit several hours but it still didn't do anything else. After its started it seems to process for about a minute and then it stops and my whole computer freezes. I have to turn it off and back on to be able to do anything.
Hi candi7, There does not seem to be any malware on your system. How is your computer running now? Are there any unwanted pop-ups or redirects?
Seems to be running pretty good. It was just a little weird right around when that scan found those Trojans but a couple days later they seems to have just disappeared and my computer was back to being normal. I've been doing the virus scans every night(like I always do) and it keeps saying "No Malware Found". I haven't had any pop ups (or not many at all) that I can remember. A few days ago my computer was running pretty slow and the computer seemed to keep processing something even when I wasn't doing anything. But, I think that might have had something to do with receiving some updates from my virus protection(I think I read something about it in an email from them the following day). Other than that everything seems to be alright. Its just so weird how those Trojans showed up out of the blue one day and a day or two later they were gone, they just disappeared. Can that happen? I thought when you got a virus or something like that you had to remove it, I didn't think it would just go away on its own. But, then again I really don't know to much about those viruses and the technical side of computers, I just know how to use them or rather the programs on them for things like typing, pictures, the internet, etc. …. :D
Hi Candi7,

IT APPEARS THAT YOUR LOGS ARE NOW CLEAN :D SO LETS DO A COUPLE OF THINGS TO WRAP THIS UP!! :D

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.
———-

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean
———-

If you have not defragged your hard drive lately, it may like to try Puran Defragmenter that you can find here.
———-

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following text into the Run box as shown and click OK.
(Note: There is a space between the ..X and the /U that needs to be there.)

Clean up with OTL:
  • Double-click OTL.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTL main screen, press the CLEANUP button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Any of the logs that you created for use in the forums or remaining tools that have not yet been removed can be deleted so they aren't cluttering up your desktop.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Enable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer. This helps Windows Vista users stay more protected from attack by running Internet Explorer with restricted privileges as well as reducing the ability to write, alter or destroy data on your system or install malicious code. To make sure this is running follow these steps:
  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click on Tools > Internet Options
  • Press Security tab
  • Select Internet zone then place check next to Enable Protected Mode if not already done
  • Do the same for Local Intranet, Trusted Sites and Restricted Sites and then press Apply
  • Restart Internet Explorer and in the bottom right corner of your screen you will see Protected Mode: On showing you it is enabled.
3. Use and Update an Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

4. Firewall
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here.
**Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other**

5. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current. Windows XP users can visit Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Windows Vista/7 users can open the Start menu > All Programs > Windows Update > Check for Updates (in left hand task pane) to update these systems. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

6. Filehippo's Update Checker. It is free utilitiy that scan your computer for installed software, checks the versions and then sends this information to see if there are any newer releases. Available software updates are displayed and you can decide which ones to download and install. Among many other types of programs, they includes a number of the Anti-Spyware, Firewall/Security and Anti-Virus programs that have been recommended (though not all of them). Note: Definition files should be updated from within the programs themselves. The Update Checker look for newer versions of the software program, not definition files.

7. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

8. WOT , Web of Trust, As 'Googling' is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an add-on available for Firefox, Internet Explorer as well as Google Chrome.

9. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

10. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?

Please reply to this thread once more if you are satisfied so that we can mark the problem as resolved.
Whadda ya know, something finally worked …… :D …. lol! I downloaded the TFC and ran it. It ran and rebooted my computer. Then I went on to your next step to uninstall Combofix. I went to Start, selected Run and typed in Combofix /Uninstall but when I did that it tried to run ComboFix. I kept clicking on the red x in the upper right hand corner and then (a couple boxes came up saying it detected antivirus), then a box came up saying Combofix was unintalled but it uninstalled the COMBO-FIX (the last one we tried) so the regular or original ComboFix is still on my desktop. Should I try going through the uninstall steps again to try and uninstall the other one? Also, there are some other things still on my desktop from earlier when that other guy was helping me. I have dds, rkill, aswMBR and a log/report for aswMBR, something called Extras(looks like a log or report), TDSSKiller and something I'm not sure if its from here but I don't think I had it before called eSetsmartinstaller - do you have any idea what that is? Then I have the original ComboFix and OTL and a log/report for OTL and now the TFC. Could you please tell me how to get rid of these other things (dds, rkill, etc.)? And, I seen you have a way for me to make Internet Explorer more secure which I will follow the directions but I've been using Firefox, I heard its more secure than using Internet Explorer. Plus now I have gotten used to using it. I just started using a newer Antivirus program called F-Secure and it has a Firewall and also has the online security and it tells me if something is trying to move, change, etc. a program on my computer. But, I printed your last post and will hang on to it because I'm only using the F-Secure for a few more months. I'm helping in testing their newer Security program. If its not to expensive I might get it but I'll probably go back to Spyware Terminator or another free one since funds are low. Thanks for all your help!!!
