Yesterday Rubotted popped up with a possible kraken bobax infection. Not surprisingly none of my other anti-malware programs has found anything. I don't know if the warning is real or a false positive. HijackThis log follows:

Hi Andthewolf,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

That is a fairly common false positive from Rubotted…. but let's stir things around a little bit and see what we can find.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Thank you, Tomk, The DDS.txt report follows and attach.txt is attached. Process log is one of the running processes you will find. I know about it and run it all the time for diagnostic purposes. By the way, DDS.scr ended with a Windows Script Host error message: 'Can't find script engine "VBSCRIPT" for script "C:\Documents and Settings\[myusername]\Local Settings\Temp\MSGP.PIF" Is that to be expected? . By the way, DDS.scr ended with a Windows Script Host error message: 'Can't find script engine "VBSCRIPT" for script "C:\Documents and Settings\[myusername]\Local Settings\Temp\MSGP.PIF" Is that to be expected?

Nope. I don't even know what MSGP.PIF is.

I see you have JavaRa installed. You also have some old Java remnants. Please run JavaRa and hhen click Remove Older Versions.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
Thanks for reminding me about JavaRa, Tomk. I was able to save a list of what ESET found, but that does not look to me like a log, so I'm not sure I did the right thing, or whether I missed a choice somewhere. Anyway the list, which follows: did not turn up anything I don't know about. All it showed were a bunch of programs from my collection of Nirsoft utilities and Anti-Keylogger Tester (AKLT.exe) which to make sure that programs like Keyscrambler do what they claim to. C:\Zipinstalled\Anti-Keylogger Tester\AKLT.exe Win32/Leaktest.AKLT.25 application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\astlog.exe Win32/PSWTool.AsteriskLogger.104 application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\awatch.exe a variant of Win32/NirSoft.AdapterWatch.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\chromepass.exe Win32/PSWTool.ChromePass.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\dialupass.exe a variant of Win32/PSWTool.Dialupass.F application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\iepv.exe a variant of Win32/PSWTool.IEPassView.NAE application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\lsasecretsview.exe Win32/PSWTool.LsasView application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\mailpv.exe a variant of Win32/PSWTool.MailPassView.E application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\mspass.exe a variant of Win32/MPass.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\netpass.exe a variant of Win32/NetPass.AA application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\operapassview.exe Win32/PSWTool.OperaPassView application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\passwordfox.exe Win32/PSWTool.PassFox.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\produkey.exe a variant of Win32/PSWTool.ProductKey application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\pstpassword.exe a variant of Win32/PSWTool.PstPassword.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\rdpv.exe Win32/PSWTool.RDPassView.NAA application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\sniffpass.exe a variant of Win32/Sniffer.SniffPass.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\vncpassview.exe Win32/PSWTool.VNCPassView.102 application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\wirelesskeyview.exe a variant of Win32/WirelessKeyView.A application C:\Zipinstalled\NirLauncher\NirSoft\wirelessnetview.exe probably a variant of Win32/PSWTool.WirelessNetView.A application If I have screwed up, let me know and I will try again.

If I have screwed up, let me know and I will try again.

You did fine.

If you know about those entries… then I'll assume you know how to use them responsibly.

I'm not finding any malware.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Thank you, Tomk I'm glad that it seems to be a false positive, but I wonder why RuBotted is suddenly (from what I can see) popping up with kraken bobax warnings on lots of peoples systems. Actually, I have never had any need to use any of the Nirsoft utilities that ESET flagged, though I use others by Nir Sofer. I have them only because I download the Nirsoft utilites as a group, as I do with the Sysinternals utilities. Thanks once again!
