Hi,

I was on the internet when a pop-up from Windows Defender came up saying I had a severe threat from a Trojan: win32/Hiloti.gen!E. Before I realized my mistake, I clicked on "repair" or "remove," or whatever the option was. It immediately started to download something and I turned the computer off as quickly as I could. The next day I used the computer and there was no problem.

But today, 2 days later, the same Windows Defender Warning came up. This time, the Avira Anti-Virus started going crazy with warnings. I did a system scan with Avira and it did not find anything. I then did a system scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and it identified a file called Trojan.Dropper. I quarantined and removed it. But when I began using the internet, every command would take so long to do, even typing. The web browser keeps saying "Not Responding" and disappearing from the task bar on the bottom of the screen.

Here is the log from HiJackThis:

Thanks for your help,

Hi,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. Logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Do not delete anything unless instructed to.
  • DO NOT use tools such as ComboFix without supervision.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clean.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
===================================================

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
===================================================

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

In your next reply, please post the following:
  • MalwareBytes log
  • ComboFix log
Thank you very much for your quick reply.

Thanks!
It seems to be running well. I haven't had the redirecting problems when I get on the internet, and the internet is running much quicker than it was before. Does it look like everything is fine now after those scans?
Yes your computer appears to be clean! :)

Now let's clean up the tools we used and send you on your way.

Please do the following:

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now copy/paste Combofix /uninstall into the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer More Secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl and click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected and Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to Prompt, and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to Disable.
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis.  With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update   regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?

Do you have any further questions?
Thank you very much for all of your time and help. My computer is running very well, and I'm doing the updates you recommended and installing the MVPS Hosts program as well. Thank you!
