Hi,

I used the malware forum to check for viruses etc and seem to be clear. (see the lik below for the string). My wife's laptop still seems to run really slow and freezes up quite a bit. Her machine is an HP Pavillion dv6500 notebook running Vista home premium w/ service pack 2. The 140 GB harddrive has about 50 GB free. It seems as if the harddrive is whirling and clattering white a bit. SOmetimes when you're moving around a site and the small whirling circle is going the system freezes. If you click on "back" or "favorites" the screen goes foggy, as if the brightness or contast are adjusted to some extreme. When this happens it is unresponsive until it decides to start again.
Any help at identifying what could be amiss would be appreciated.

One quesition I have is: During my malware check, the whatthetech person recommended to only have one antivirus and firewall installed on a machine. I installed Norton Antivirus program and I know it has a firewall. Would it be helpful to uninstall the Windows firewall (or the Norton one)?

Here's the Whatthetech malware string.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Jeff
Hi kurdyj00,

Leave Norton's Antivirus and firewall in place, it will disable the Windows firewall which can't be uninstalled.

It seems as if the hard drive is whirling and clattering quite a bit.

Never a good sign. Your HDD might be on it's last legs. Now is the time to make sure that all valuable data is backed up to either disks or a USB hard drive. Don't forget email, passwords and serial numbers etc.

Check your hard drive for errors

If there are faults, the hard drive needs replacing.

If the hard drive is okay, how does it behave if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If better then something is starting at boot that is causing the problem.

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem.

These are good tutorials on using msconfig in XP, Vista or Windows 7:
How to use msconfig in Windows XP
How to use msconfig in Windows Vista
How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, boot to Safe Mode again, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system.
Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled.
Hi Lee an Rich, Harddrive seems ok by chkdsc. Not sure how to start Vista in Safe-mode. Tried F8 on restart but not sure what to expect. No "safemode" keystroke indicated upon startup. Anyway it seemed to start normally. not sure how using msconfig will behave if I don't know if I'm in safe mode. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Jeff
Hi kurdyj00,

"Getting into Windows Safe Mode". http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
You will be given some options. Choose Safe mode with Networking as advised by Ztruker.

Cheers,
Lee
