I visited blitzgamer.com and I clicked on 'Temporary allow all this page' on the menu of the NoScript addon for Firefox. I immediately got a warning from Avast letting me know that they blocked a malicious threat. Next thing I know I have two windows that popup. One which says that Microsoft Security Essential was installed with the button options of 'Finish' and 'Cancel', I clicked on 'Cancel' and it closed. The other popup window has the following error message:

An error occured while trying to copy a file:

C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\defender.exe

With the option to Retry, Ignore or Abort, I chose the Abort option and it closed.

I ran the OTL, HijackThis successfully but when I tried to run the DDS program I got the following message:

This tool does not your support your Operating System

Press any key to continue…

I tried running the DDS program with the same result.

Here are my logs from OTL:

Hello Maverick and welcome to the WTT forum.

My name is Satchfan and I would be glad to help you with your computer problem. Please read the following guidelines which will help to make cleaning your machine easier:
• Please do not install/uninstall any programs unless asked to.
• Please do not run any scans other than those requested
• Please follow all instructions in the order posted
• Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
• If you don't understand something, please don't hesitate to ask for clarification before proceeding
• The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
• Please reply within 3 days. If you do not reply within this period I will post a reminder but topics with no reply in 4 days will be closed!
Please note that I am still in training and my replies need to be checked by an expert in order for you to receive the best possible advice. This may result in a small delay between my posts but I shall try to keep this to a minimum.

I am looking through your logs now and will reply as soon as possible.

Satchfan
Thanks for your help Satchfan. This is my work laptop and I'm hoping that I did avert the infection but it's better safe than sorry hence the reason why I did the scans and made the post. I look forward to your next reply.
Hello again Maverick

This is my work laptop

If you work for a company and it is their computer I suggest you contact your IT department as we generally only help with home computers. Working on a corporate computer can sometimes change settings which your company might not be too pleased about.

If it is your own business then I can help but be aware that we cannot be held responsible if any proprietary business information is compromised due to being on an open forum.

Please advise me on the situation.

Thanks

Satchfan
It's my laptop for my own business and I'm aware of the potential dangers. Safety precautions have been taken, all important information is always kept on an external harddrives or through the old fashion method of paper work.. I'm presently using another laptop to continue with my work until I get the ok for the laptop in question.
Hi Maverick

It's my laptop for my own business and I'm aware of the potential dangers.

Good, let's see if we can find out what is happening here.

===================================================

P2P - I see you have P2P software, (Frostwire), installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infection. If your computer is infected, it almost certainly contributed to your current situation.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are more often than not, infected. The bad guys use P2P file-sharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Please see this topic for more information:

Perils of P2P File Sharing.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it now. You can do so via Control Panel, Programs, and then Programs and Features.

Should you decide to keep it, please don’t use it until we have finished up here.

  • You may need two posts to fit them both in.
