Ok, rebooted and all system tray icons reappeared. Then I installed Avast! free version. Ran Malwarebytes' after updating, scan completed and no malicious items were detected. Nothing to be removed, no reboot required. Report log posted below. ESET Online scanner will be in the next reply. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 5985 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 3/7/2011 11:16:29 PM mbam-log-2011-03-07 (23-16-29).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 192384 Time elapsed: 9 minute(s), 19 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected) Next, I will run the ESET Online scanner and reply with the report log.
I'm still running the the ESET Online Scanner.. After I was prompted to install ActiveX controls, the online scanner was unable to run which I thought was because Avast! was now installed and active. So I disabled avast for 10min and this still didn't allowed ESET to run. It turns out that ESET would not run with only the two boxes checked as you instructed -it kept kicking an error 101. If I also checked the box for "Enable Anti-stealth technology" (was checked by default), it worked fine. This scan is taking MUCH longer as it appeared to be a full scan, which had to work it's way through about 80gb of music files on the c: drive! It's already at 30min and still only 11% complete. I think I'll have to let it run overnight and post the log tomorrow! Then I'll also take care of the Java and Adobe updates.
Online scans can take quite a bit of time depending on how many files are on the machine. It's fine to just let it run and post it whenever it completes.
Ok, we have success! Log for ESET is below. I then took care of the Java and Adobe updates as instructed without issues. What's next? Thanks! The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
  • Click Start > Run
  • Now type Combofix /uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Great job! Your logs appear to be malware free and you do not appear to be experiencing any malware related problems.
Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer malware free and secure:

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Use and Update your AntiVirus Software
It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
Your log doesn't appear to show a third-party software firewall installed - if you have one, and I've missed it, please ignore this. I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Use only one antivirus and one firewall on your machine
Having more than one anti-virus program and one firewall on your machine, even if only one is running, can cause conflicts and slowdowns in the performance of the machine.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
This can be done by following these simple instructions:
1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
2. Click once on the Security tab
3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
11. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
12. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
13. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Keep your Java, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash Up to Date
Older versions of these programs can contain security vulnerabilities. It is very important to keep them updated.

Update and Run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
Scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software making sure you update definitions each time you scan.

To simplify making sure you have the latest version of many of your security programs and applications, you may want to consider:
Secunia's Personal Software Inspector (PSI). It is a free utility that scans your computer for installed applications and checks to see if they have the latest security patches and updates. If it finds any applications with possible security issues, links and/or instructions are provided for the necessariy updates.

Filehippo's Update Checker. It is free utilitiy that scan your computer for installed software, checks the versions and then sends this information to see if there are any newer releases. Available software updates are displayed and you can decide which ones to download and install. Among many other types of programs, they includes a number of the Anti-Spyware, Firewall/Security and Anti-Virus programs that have been recommended (though not all of them). Note: Definition files should be updated from within the programs themselves. The Update Checker look for newer versions of the software program, not definition files.

Ok, uninstalled combofix as instructed without issue. But, I then visited microsoftupdate.com and it found that I needed 6 high priority updates (4 for xp and 2 for Office 07), I clicked "Install" and all 6 failed installation! "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from begin downloaded or installed. Solution: To fixe the problem, try installing the updates again. If that doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try to solve the problem." Well, trying again didn't solve the problem and troubleshooting is a joke with this site. What else can I try? As far as a firewall, we don't have one currently installed because we had zonealarm but it was interfering with our file sharing between computer's. As well, I'd heard that the wifi router actually acts as a firewall between the computers and the internet. Is this false information? How would you recommend to have firewall and still allow file sharing between the computers? Which firewall would you recommend? All the setting recommendations for making IE more secure were already selected as you outlined. No adjustments needed there.

First thing I'd try is booting into safe mode with networking to install the updates.
Boot your computer in Safe Mode with Networking
  • Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded, start tapping the F8 key.
  • The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode with Networking menu option.
  • Press Enter.
  • The computer then begins to start in Safe mode w/networking
  • Log into your usual account
  • When you are finished with all updates, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.

Many routers today do come with a firewall as a part of them, but having a third party software firewall offers and additional layer of protection. If you are relying the firewall that comes with Service Pack 2, then you need to install one. While the SP2 firewall is better than nothing, it doesn't monitor outgoing traffic, so anything malicious on your computer can 'phone home' at will. If you are using a wireless router that comes with a NAT hardware firewall, this also doesn't monitor outgoing connections.

Please let me know if you are able to get the Windows Updates installed OK or not.
Running in safe mode with networking seems to have failed too, but in a different way. When I load the windows update page that is supposed to check the computer for system updates, it immediately skips ahead to the "choose which updates to install" or button selection. When I select , an error appears "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem." with options to look at their FAQ, run their troubleshooting, or link to the windows update usergroup. Appears Microsoft is doing some website updates, so will try again later. As far as the firewall, i reloaded the newest version of zonealarm and during the installation process, it asked me if the installation is on a home network where file sharing is needed, I selected "yes" and the issues I once had are now a thing of the past! By the way, thanks for all your help. I am sooo happy I found you and this tech support forum. You saved me, and I will recommend whatthetech to all my friends! Thanks again! -Craig
I'm glad you got the firewall working! And, I have recently heard the servers at Microsoft have been very busy with the service pack updates they released for Windows 7. Keep trying for those updates in a few days and see what happens. I'm going to go ahead and close this thread but if you continue to have issues with the update you can either PM me and we'll reopen it, or you can post in our Windows Forum and they can give you a hand.
