Posting from public library since I get "connection reset" when I try to post anywhere, email, or message anyone (and couldnt get Live Chat to work). Did manage to partially email myself (with Hijack report to post from library), but message was cut short, and it was sent 4 times (4 emails).
Could not connect to internet in safe mode.
Running Windows XP, using Firefox browser. Dell desktop Dimension 550 (about 6 years old). Using AVG freeversion.

Details:
Tried to run some EXES which disappeared upon running (my fault - would a "sandbox" have prevented infection?). I immediately updated and ran quick scan of Malware Malbites. It found and deleted one adware.
Ran AVG for whole computer. It found two rootkits in a temp folder, which I had it remove. Turned off PC, hoping any infection was caught. Wrong.
Next day (today) booting up works up to the moment when desktop icons would appear over desktop background - they dont ususally appear.
After several attempts to boot up, if it does boot, seems to run okay. However, when online and using google, usually get misdirected to other sites when I click on a result. At some point, browser screen collapses, get pop-up that says Windows wants to scan my PC for a virus. I closed that out since I cant tell if it's real or more malware.
Have gotten this warning from my PC a few times
"Generic host process for Win32 Services encountered problem…"
and had to reboot (couldnt go online).
After a few minutes when online the PC slows down/stalls (fan kicks in). Now cant post to sites or email.

Hi there let me see what you have, these are small programmes which will fit handily on a small USB

Download aswMBR.exe ( 511KB ) to your desktop.

Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it

Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Click the "Fix" in case of infection

Save the aswMBR.log to the desktop. Then post the log in your next reply

THEN

Download OTL to your Desktop

Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
Click on Minimal Output at the top
Click on Scan all users
Download the following file scan.txt to your Desktop. Click here to download it. You may need to right click on it and select "Save"
Double click inside the Custom Scan box at the bottom
A window will appear saying "Click Ok to load a custom scan from a file or Cancel to cancel"
Click the Ok button and navigate to the file scan.txt which we just saved to your desktop
Select scan.txt and click Open. Writing will now appear under the Custom Scan box
Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

hi,
I have an old laptop I can use at home to access the internet and exchange data with thumbdrive (which hopefully wont transfer infections).
the link to scan.txt doesnt go to the program page(for me). I searched the GEEKS site for scan.txt and got this page - I downloaded it to the laptop and hope that's what I need. http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/file/…n-file-scantxt/

So the scan.txt contents wasnt somehow specifically designed for the PC it was downloaded to, correct?

Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

I started OTL (without ticking any boxes as in first run) with added text and RunFix. Desktop icons disappeared and got an error popup for OTL that says Cannot create file C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts. with an OK button to close popup.Should I close it, and do something else?

well, I closed the popup about 10 minutes ago, and nothing seemed to be happening, so I rebooted. Got a log notepad that said the hosts (in that error popup) "was moved successfully. Registry entries deleted on Reboot.." Should I re-run the process? Any idea how long it will take, and if it indicates when done?

If the log popped up it is done, dependant on how much stuff you had in your temp files that could include a long wait as it deletes them all There will be an indication on the log of how much was removed Continue with MBAM please and see if it will update from the affected system

Inre OTL, I had closed the error popup, then waited for about 10 minutes when it seemed like nothing was happening. I rebooted, and then get that message. I was thinking I must have interrupted the process when I rebooted…

Anyway, I thought should still run the OTL Quick Scan first (as per earlier instructions), and am posting that log, followed by the Mbam log (which showed no infections so nothing needed removal).

Nice what I would like you to do now - before I remove my tools - is to test your internet connection, do some searches, visit your normal sites. Once you are happy let me know and we will then tidy you up. Also let me know of any other problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day —– Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL

Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands
[resethosts]
[purity]
[emptytemp]
[EMPTYFLASH]
[CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
[Reboot]

Then click the Run Fix button at the top
Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL again and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

Download and run Puran Disc Defragmenter
For the first run I would recommend a boot defrag and disk check

PC seems to be running relatively normally (after defrag). Is it okay to be running AVG free and Spywareguard? I think they both have realtime antispyware.
