Hi CatByte:

I'm ready to close this thread and mark the issue as resolved.

I've run your cleanup routine and re-installed NIS 2011 and everything appears to be running normally. I agree it would still be prudent to do a repair of my Vista SP2 installation but I'm having problems following the instructions posted here in my thread in the WTT Windows forum so I think I'll just take my laptop in to the shop for a clean re-install of SP2 when I can afford to do so.

Here's some new info I've found since my last post that you might be interested in:

Creating a Hosts File with Vista

I'm still getting an error message about permissions for my Hosts file when I run HijackThis (see attached .jpg) and I still can't manually create a Hosts file using the instructions on the MS Support site posted here. I'm not sure if I still have a problem with some of my folder permissions, but after reading an article here about "special" instructions for creating the Hosts file in Vista, I'm beginning to think that this is just a glitch caused by the local security settings in Vista's User Access Control (UAC). One of the suggested workarounds is to create the Hosts file from within an elevated command prompt, which is the same method I had to use to get the SubInACL reset.cmd batch file to run correctly on my machine.

I'm not going to worry about this since the Hosts file we created with the OTL tool seems to be working normally.

The Danger of Using "secedit /configure" with Vista

I found out why it's dangerous to use the “secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\inf\defltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose” XP command when you're running SubInACL with Vista. Someone commented on Aaron Stebner's blog here that they tried running SubInALC on their machine with that line of "secedit /configure"code added to reset.cmd and it wiped out all the extra user accounts he created for other family members.

I can't thank you enough for getting my Windows Update working again and figuring out how to fix my Windows registry and folder permissions. I struggled for over a month trying to resolve these problems and you went way beyond the call of duty to help me, especially after you determined it wasn't a malware issue.
