2. Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others)

Go to: http://www.pcpitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!"
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration and present performance levels of your machine.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

After reviewing the results we will be more informed and may be able to provide better recommendations for you to work towards improving your machine's performance.

3. Start Up Service.

It would also be good to see what is starting when you boot your computer. Install and run CodeStuff Starter.

http://codestuff.tripod.com/products_starter.html

Select the Startups tab then click on File, save as plain text.

Copy and paste that info here.

While waiting for Jimbo to respond, I see some problems with the PCPitStop results. 1. You need more memory. 256 is not enough fro XP to run well in. 512 is pretty much the minimum. 2. You're running uTorrent. Not sure how you have it setup but uTorrent normally makes your computer a server that the rest of the world can upload data from, which can have a negative affect on your performance. It's also a great way to pick up malware unless you're very careful what you download. 3. System Restore is turned off. I can never understand why anyone does this. It provides one more way to recover from a problem. I do believe you should reduce the amount of HD space allocated to it to around 2GB but other than that use it, it can help. 4. Defrag of C: may help a little. 5. Looks like your clock is off by 23 seconds or so. Not a biggie. I would not update any devices drivers unless they are not working. Doing so can often lead to problems. Works much better in Windows 7 but with XP, if it ain't broke, don''t fix it. You might want to try uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 and reverting to IE7. IE8 often has a significant negative impact ion older system with constrained memory. IE7 much less so. If it doesn't make any difference, you can always reinstall IE8. If it does make a difference, to prevent you're getting IE8 forced on you again, do the following: Control Panel, System. Click on Automatic Update tab. Select Notify but don't download or install. When next offered IE8, uncheck it and click Close or OK. Chekc the box that says to not offer it again. That's my $.02 worth … :D
Hiya Screwbdoo,

From looking over the logs I see a lot of things here.

The real killer is the system memory 256 megs, TBH thats real low and to gain any speed or better performance we may not even see much, but we can try a few things to see. Recommendations: ADD more ram. 512 will help.

1. Most important: Please make backup of all your data before proceeding with anything else, this is needed in case you run into problems later on or would need to restore information.

2. System Restore is turned off, Why I do not know but its very important to turn this back on, here is a link of how to do this.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405

3. After you have turned on the system restore, create a new restore point to fall back on if needed. Here's how to do this.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/h…ew_03may19.mspx

4. P2P - I see you have P2P software ( µTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It likely contributed to your current situation. uTorrent normally makes your computer a server that the rest of the world can upload data from, which can have a negative affect on your performance.

This page has info : http://malwareremoval.com/p2pindex.php Will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares

Instruction of this, to remove Utorrent from your system..

5. Use Codestuff to disable all unnecesarily programs that you are not going to be using, meaning you will only run them by double clicking to launch them, Programs running in the background with limited memory on your machine will hog your performance.
IE: Fillhippo.com checker
Adobe Arm
Adobe Reader
Main one I see is that USB Phone Majic Jack - thats a real killer

Take out the few or ones you will not be using to see if boot times are faster and system performance is better.

6. Try running this; ATF here is the link.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/downloads.ht…nload&id=17

When done with that run this : Defrag here is the link.

http://www.piriform.com/defraggler/update?….201&l=1033

Once you open the program
A. Click on the analyze tab
b. When done click on the file list tab, Check all and then click on the defrag checked.
c. Once that has been done go ahead and defrag the hard drive c:

After all thats been done please report back here of any improvements of the system.
