I closed it through task manager, then ran DDS.
Uninstall hidden system device

Open Device Manager

Click WinKey + R to open a Run command box. Copy/paste the following text into the open run box and click OK:

devmgmt.msc

The Device Manager window should now be open.

In the menu at the top, click the View tab and click 'Show hidden devices'

Scroll down to System Devices. Click the + sign to expand, and look for a device with [cmz vmkd]Virtual Bus in the name.

Right click "[cmz vmkd] Virtual Bus" > choose "Uninstall"

Once you've done it, delete the existing copy of ConspireCF.exe and download a new one with the same renamed file and now it should run.
I followed the instructions, and Combo Fix worked fine, except for a few bumps. One is that I didn't have Internet access when I ran CF, and it didn't ask me to install recovery console. Two, I could find no way to disable the out-of-date McAfee, and while ComboFix was scanning, McAfee detected a virus and deleted it. The desktop went back to normal (not black) after it deleted that. Three, I looked at the log when it opened, and several things were deleted. When I tried to open it from its saved location, I got an error box: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." I'm not sure what the problem is, but I could possibly tether the laptop so it would have net access if that would change anything.
1. That should be the way so it is normal. As for the recovery console, just skip that part. 2. It's ok to leave McAfee if CF wasn't hindered. 3. You have to restart the computer after the deletion. After that you can find the log in C:\ComboFix.txt and you should have your internet connection back.
I didn't mean ComboFix had disabled my Internet, I know that's standard procedure. I just didn't have internet access at all because of my location, until just now when I tethered this laptop to post the log. I could open it fine after a restart.

Let me know if you have any problems in performing with the steps above or any questions you may have.

Good Day!
Everything seems to be running fine, from what I can tell. That IP address is for the proxy I use to tether this laptop for internet access at the moment. Eset ran, but didn't give me a log. It detected two infected files, though. But MBAM didn't detect any, so I re-ran ESET afterward and made sure to copy the threats to a text file using the in-program option. ESET "log": C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\drivers\_vbma0f49_.sys.zip a variant of Win32/Rootkit.Kryptik.CK trojan C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\CJHKC0RG\script_card[1] Win32/Adware.Antivirus2010 application MBAM: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 5531 Windows 6.0.6001 Service Pack 1 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18928 1/16/2011 8:47:58 AM mbam-log-2011-01-16 (08-47-58).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 155515 Time elapsed: 4 minute(s), 13 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected)
Good. TFC should take care of the temporary internet files in the system.

Download TFC to your desktop
  • Close any open windows.
  • Double click the TFC icon to run the program
  • TFC will close all open programs itself in order to run,
  • Click the Start button to begin the process.
  • Allow TFC to run uninterrupted.
  • The program should not take long to finish it's job
  • Once its finished it should automatically reboot your machine,
  • if it doesn't, manually reboot to ensure a complete clean

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

1. Create a new Restore Point
  • Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
  • Click on the Control Panel menu option.
  • Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
  • Click on the System menu option.
  • Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
  • Create the manual restore point you should click on the Create button. When you press this button a prompt will appear asking you to provide a title for this manual restore point.
  • Type in a title for the manual restore point and press the Create button.
  • Close the System window after you have been advised that the procedure has been successfully completed.
.
2. Clear your existing system restore points except for the new clean restore point you just created:
  • Go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Next to System Restore click Clean up
  • This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

MICROSOFT UPDATES
It is very important that you get all of the critical updates for your Operating System and Internet Explorer. Keeping your OS and browser up to date will help make you less susceptible to attacks by Trojans and viruses. Please go to Microsoft and download all the critical updates to help prevent possible re-infection.

Also, support is ending for some versions of Windows > http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w…ce-packs?os=xp

Passwords
It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them and consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe.

Make Internet Explorer more secure
Click Start > Run
Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

SPYWARE PREVENTION
This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. In light of your recent problem, I'm sure you'd like to avoid any future infections. Please read these well written articles:
To help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs if you do not already have them:
  • WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop

WOT has an add-on available for both Firefox and IE.

  • SpywareBlaster prevents the installation of ActiveX-based malware, blocks cookies, and restricts the actions of "bad" sites. See tutorial here
  • MVPS HOSTS FILE replaces your current HOSTS file with one that will restrict known ad sites from serving you unsolicited advertisements. It basically prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting the attempted connections to 127.0.0.1, which is the IP of your local computer. See guide here and for Windows Vista here
  • Download Host.zip and Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right-click hosts.zip and select 'Extract all files' or 'Extract files…'.
  • Follow the prompts and click 'Finish'.
  • This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.
  • Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine.
  • Once updated you should see another prompt that the task was completed.
Follow this list and keep your antivirus program and antispyware programs updated and scan with them on a regular basis. By doing so, your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Hopefully this should take care of your problems! Good luck.

Do you have any questions or problems to ask? Please do not hesitate to do so.

**Please respond this one more time to ensure it is resolved.
I haven't done anything past the OTL step, because I still have a few icons leftover from where the infection killed the scanning tools I had downloaded. I have two HijackThis icons, and three randomly-named ones. They have the little people-icon in the left-hand corner of them, but OTL didn't get rid of them.
