Hi! My sister recently asked me to take a look at her laptop, she said it had been acting strange, and was constantly telling her to run an antivirus that she didn't own. I've repeatedly told her to get an antivirus of her own in the past, but now it looks like she's waited too late and her computer is full of nasties. The desktop has turned black, and when I start it up, it has a box saying something to the tune of "Your system is infected!". I tried to do the steps listed in the "Are you infected?" topic, but the virus is killing all of the scanners. The only thing I managed to run completely was dds, and that only gave me one log. I know there's not much info to go on, but this thing is too tricky for me to handle on me own. Below is the contents of dds.txt, thanks in advance! _ DDS (Ver_10-12-12.02) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 8:46:44.38 on Wed 01/12/2011 Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18928 Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Hello there, sarin_light

:welcome:

I'm Conspire, I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Read the entire procedure
  • It is important to perform ALL actions in sequence.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with me till you're given the all clear.
  • Remember, absence of symptoms does not mean the infection is all gone.
  • Don't attempt to clean your computer with any tools other than the ones I ask you to use during the cleanup process.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

—————————————————————————————————

I need you to get another scan before we can proceed.

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Extract the contents of the zipped file to desktop (applicable only to Zip mirror) .
  • Double click [external image: Posted Image] or [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan…click on NO.
    [external image: Posted Image]

    [external image: Posted Image]
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following …
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in your reply.
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<— ROOKIT" entries

—————————————————————————————————
Thanks in advance for your help, Conspire! The virus killed GMER(the randomly named file), as well. It starts the scan, then closes out. On a side note, all of the scanners I used are unusable after the virus kills them. They get a little box in the corner of the icon that looks like two little people.
Ok, I need you to run this tool and then try running GMER again.

If you have an active internet connection, copy/paste the links below into your browser, don't click them or the rogue might redirect. If you don't have an active internet connection, download the tools from another machine, and transfer them to the affected machine via USB flash drive.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again.

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 5 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.

rkill.exe
rkill.com
rkill.scr
WiNlOgOn.exe
uSeRiNiT.exe

Note:

You will likely see a message from this rogue telling you the file is infected. Ignore the message. Leave the message OPEN, do not close the message. Run rkill repeatedly until it's able to do it's job. This may take a few tries. You'll be able to tell rkill has done it's job when your desktop (explorer.exe) cycles off and then on again.

At this point, you should now be able to run analysis tools.

If for some reason the machine reboots, repeat the process. Again, try not to restart the machine.
Rkill seemed to work, it cycled my desktop off and restarted it, but when I tried GMER, the virus killed it again. I didn't save the Rkill log, but it seemed like the only thing it stopped was the out of date McAfee.
Ok, then have a try on this

Please download exeHelper to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
Post the contents of exehelperlog.txt (Will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com, and should open at the end of the scan)

Let me know if you could get GMER to run.
Here are the contents: exeHelper by Raktor Build 20100414 Run at 09:38:40 on 01/13/11 Now searching… Checking for numerical processes… Checking for sysguard processes… Checking for bad processes… Checking for bad files… Checking for bad registry entries… Resetting filetype association for .exe Resetting filetype association for .com Resetting userinit and shell values… Resetting policies… –Finished– GMER still won't run, even after running exehelper.com
Very well. We need bigger weapon in this case.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to ConspireCF before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

==================================

Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.
The green loading bar that shows up loaded to about 99%, and then just closed out and did nothing. But the icon is still fine, and it let me run it again to see if it would work. It doesn't look like the other files that were killed. But still no luck on it running.
We go into safe mode this time and then give CF another shot.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode
I logged into regular safe mode, not Safe Mode with Networking, and it still didn't work. ComboFix still loads fine, but the bar never fills up all the way before it exits out.
Did you right click and select Admin before you run the tools regardless on normal or safe mode? If not, right-click and select Run as Administrator with CF in normal mode.
Yes, I always selected admin before running it. I tried it in both modes again, making sure to choose Admin both times. Still doesn't work.
Let's see.. please go My Computer -> Click on Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types -> Change the ConspireCF.exe to ConspireCF.com extension. Hide the extensions back then try run CF by right clicking and select admin.
When I change the extension, there isn't an option to run the program as an admin. When I run it by double-clicking, it still exits out.
