Sherie,
We are trying to remove all traces of Norton from your PC. LiveUpdate is an unnecessary Norton process left on your system. Sometimes Norton is very difficult to remove, so they have a Norton removal tool that I am going to ask you to download and run.

Go to this site http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.j…0080828154508EN scroll down to Step2 and click on the Download button.
Select Run and follow on screen prompts and instructions. You will need to reboot your PC when done.

Next

Double click on the OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Uncheck the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
When the scan completes, it will open OTL.Txt
Note:This log can be located in the OTL. folder on you C:\ drive if it fails to open automatically.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this files and post it with your next reply.

Thanks
Bill

Thanks, Sherie
Bill Running a lot better - does not seem to be shutting down on its own any more. I am still having trouble when I shut down the computer for the night and bring it back up. I usually tells me there was an error with shut down. But the rest of it is good! :D Thanks Sherie
Sherie,
Logs look good. :D But let's do one more thing please….

Scan With RootKitUnHooker

  • Please choose one link and download Rootkit Unhooker and save it to your desktop.
  • Link 1
  • Link 2
  • Link 3
  • Now right click on RKUnhookerLE.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers and Stealth
  • Uncheck the rest. then click OK
  • When prompted to Select Disks for Scan, make sure C:\ is checked and click OK
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File > Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in your next reply.

Note** you may get the following warning, just click OK and continue.

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

When you shutdown, are you hitting Start then clicking on Shutdown? Or, do you hit and hold the power button on the front of the PC?

Thanks
Bill
Bill I am unable to download Rootkit Unhooker. Whenever I double click on any of those 3 links, once again, I get a window that pops up "Blank page - Internet Explorer". When I tell it to download anyway - nothing happens. When I shut down I always go to the start button and then shut down from there. Thanks Sherie
Hi Sherie,

Please try this, in Internet Explorer Click on Tools -> Options -> Advanced tab click on Reset.
Then try downloading Rootkit_Unhooker again.

If that doesn't work try this

Go to http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and download Firefox 3.6 and run. Do not
allow to import settings from Iexplorer. When you download a file you will not be able to
run it untill it downloads. It will download to your sherie\Downloads folder by default.

From there you can cut and paste to your desktop.

Good luck
Bill
Bill :pullhair: Ok so now I'm frustrated and not sure what I'm doing. I first re-set Internet Explorer as instructed. Then I finally was able to download RKUnhooker but it was an rdr file, so then I downloaded Biz zipper (which I can't find) to open up the rdr file. No go. Then I was somehow able to download RKUnhookerLE.EXE but when I double click on it I get "error loading driver.NTSTATUS code:OxC000036B". So then I downloaded Mozilla Firefox and have no idea what I'm doing. Any advice? Quit while I'm ahead???? lol Thanks Sherie
I am so sorry Sherie, but don't give up, we are nearly home.
Lets try this
Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at C:\Rooter.txt. Post that here

Any problems or questions?
Bill
Bill I was able to download Rooter on my desk top but as soon as I hit scan a microsoft window pops up and says "Maleware Finder has stopped working". I have tried running the scan 3 or 4 times with the same results. Thanks Sherie
Hello Sherie,
Let's do this
Please use Internet Explorer to download and run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\Program Files\ESET\log.txt into your next reply.

Thanks Bill
Bill Here is the results of the latest Eset Online Scanner: C:\SWSetup\AOLIMS\setup.exe probably a variant of Win32/Agent.HZHBURL trojan Thanks Sherie
Hello Sherie
Time for cleanup
You may keep MalwareBytes, TFC and ESET online scanner. Update and run them as you would your AV scan. If you no longer wish to keep them MalwareBytes and ESET can be removed by going to Control Panel -> Programs and Features, highlight and click uninstall. TFC can be removed by right click on the desktop icon and click delete.

Symantec Removal tool and Rootkitunhooker are removed by right click and click on delete.

DDS, GMER and OTL are removed by right click on OTL click on Run as administrator. When open click on Cleanup.

Your logs look good if there are any outstanding problems please let me know in your next post.

Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

1. Create a new Restore Point
  • Click on the Start button to open your Start Menu.
  • Click on the Control Panel menu option.
  • Click on the System and Maintenance menu option.
  • Click on the System menu option.
  • Click on System Protection in the left-hand task list.
  • Create the manual restore point you should click on the Create button.  When you press this button a prompt will appear asking you to provide a title for this manual restore point.
  • Type in a title for the manual restore point and press the Create button.
  • Close the System window after you have been advised that the procedure has been successfully completed.
.
2. Clear your existing system restore points except for the new clean restore point you just created:
  • Go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Click on Clean up system files
  • Select the More options tab
  • Next to System Restore click Clean up
  • This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

1. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Use and Update an Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to use and update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis.  With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. FIREWALL
Using a third-party firewall will allow you to give/deny access for applications that want to go online. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. A tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones can be found here

Do not install more than one firewall program because they will conflict with each other

4. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update   regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

5. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

6. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

8. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?

Is there anything else that needs attention?

Surf Safe :wavey:
Bill
Bill  Thank you for all your help. I will let you know if my computer acts up again right now it seems to be running pretty good. As advised I took out some of the programs you suggested, created a new system restore point etc., and downloaded Win Patrol. Thank you, thank you, thank you once again for your help and patience with me! Sherie :wavey:
