My computer just recently became infected and I had one heck of a time just getting to be able to post here. The computer would keep having pop ups and error messages that would freeze up the computer. I was finally able to get Malwarebytes to run after several attempts (the computer kept rebooting in the middle) After fixing the problems it found (I think, in the log it says no action taken), the computer is running better, but I want to make sure it is clean. Here are the logs: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.50.1.1100 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 5392 Windows 6.0.6002 Service Pack 2 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18999 12/25/2010 11:38:59 AM mbam-log-2010-12-25 (11-38-39).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 116256 Time elapsed: 6 minute(s), 29 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 2 Memory Modules Infected: 1 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 3 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 5 Memory Processes Infected: c:\Users\Family\AppData\Local\Temp\dtpcawvbpjbc.exe (Trojan.FakeAlert) -> 3520 -> No action taken. c:\Users\Family\AppData\Local\Temp\207964.exe (Rogue.FakeHDD) -> 836 -> No action taken. Hi,

:welcome:

My name is NoodleTech. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
As I'm still in training at What The Tech, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first. This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.
Please run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
===================================================

Next, please read through the instructions to familiarize yourself with what to expect when the tool runs.

It is vitally important that combofix is renamed before it has even started to download

Please download ComboFix from Link 1or Link 2 to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

  • If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    -Tools->Options->Main tab
-Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  • During the download, before you save it to your desktop, rename Combofix to jgh.exe

  • It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  • Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

———————————————————–

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

    ———————————————————–

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe (jgh.exe in your case) & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • Malwarebytes log
  • combofix log
How is the computer?

Thanks
The computer seems to be running OK. I have included the first Malwarebytes scan and the scan I did today.

Hi poporacer,

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\Program Files\ESET\log.txt into your next reply.
The scan completed, it stated that there were no threats, but it didn't create a log! I will try to run it again. I ran it again and got a log, doesn't look right though. here it is: ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log: OnlineScanner.ocx - delete file error:Access is denied. OnlineScanner.ocx - copy file error :The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK
Let's try a different scanner instead.

The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
  • Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
  • Then, click: Save
  • Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Well, I tried that, but Kaspersky needs a newer version of Java in order to work, I tried to install it but during the installation of the Java, I got an error 1606. I went to Java's help site, and it said to manually install the software. I downloaded the software and when I installed it, I got the same error. The help section had a place to input your system info to get help. It said to get the current Java version by going to control panel and oprning the folder there. I did NOT have a java folder in my control panel. I was unable to run the Kaspersky scanner. It appears that Java has been erased from my computer. There is no java folder in the program files. I cant install java
Hi poporacer,

Let's try this.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 23.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • In the pull down menu next to Platform select Windows
  • Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement"
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

    • Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications

Now let's try a different online scanner.

Running TrendMicro HouseCall:
  • Click Download HouseCall to begin. Please note that HouseCall requires a small download before it can scan your computer.
  • Double click HousecallLauncher.exe
  • Select the Full Scan option.
  • Let the scan run then post the results to this thread.
I was finally able to get Java installed by fixing a windows error (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886549) but Kaspersky wouldn't run properly in stated something about a constant internet connection and an error message that the license has expired. I ran the House Call and it did not find any threats. It did not print out a log. The computer seems OK but I want to make sure there is nothing else lingering. What next?

    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
2. Update your Anti-Virus Software - I can not overemphasize the need for you to update your Anti-virus application on a regular basis. With the ever increasing number of new variants of malware arriving on the scene daily, you become very susceptible to an attack without updated protection.

3. Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. Without these you are leaving the back door open.

4. Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

5. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

6. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Download and install Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real time spyware and hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would with your anti-virus software. A tutorial on installing and using this product can be found here:
Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

7. Finally, I strongly recommend that you read TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place?
