I just received help clearing up a virus on my laptop. On LDTate's recommendation, I scanned my desktop with Malwarebytes. Since this was the first step I had taken, I wasn't sure if it was okay to just delete the virus with malwarebytes so I thought I should ask. Here's what it found: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46 www.malwarebytes.org Database version: 5160 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702 11/20/2010 11:53:08 PM mbam-log-2010-11-20 (23-53-08).txt Scan type: Quick scan Objects scanned: 194587 Time elapsed: 4 minute(s), 18 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 1 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\main.bho.1 (Trojan.BHO) -> No action taken. I'm headed to bed but will check back in the morning.

Vista and Windows 7 users:
1. These tools MUST be run from the executable. (.exe) every time you run them
2. With Admin Rights (Right click, choose "Run as Administrator")

Run it again and delete it or if you're still where you can delete it without running it, just do that

Run a new MBAM scan to make sure it's gone.

Next:

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
Click the green ESET Online Scanner button.
Read the End User License Agreement and check the box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
Click on the Start button next to it.
You may receive an alert on the address bar that "This site might require the following ActiveX control…Click here to install…". Click on that alert and then click Insall ActiveX component.
A new window will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?"".
Answer Yes to download and install the ActiveX controls that allows the scan to run.
Click Start.
Check Remove found threats and Scan potentially unwanted applications.
Click Scan to begin.
If offered the option to get information or buy software. Just close the window.
Wait for the scan to finish
Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2 If using this link, Right Click and select Save As.

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Notes: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed. Skip the Recovery Console part if you're running Vista or Windows 7.

Note: If you have SP3, use the SP2 package.
If Vista or Windows 7, skip the Recovery Console part

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt using Copy / Paste in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please do not attach the scan results from Combofx. Use copy/paste.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Did not notice any performance problems before. Right now (at 2:00 am) things seem fine. Will need to see tomorrow. Will also need to add back antivirus software.
My only question is if you added those listed in your Trusted Zone:

Other then that, it looks good to me

Good job

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

For XP:
  • Click START run
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

For Vista / Windows 7
  • Click START Search
  • Now type ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

Here's my usual all clean post

To be on the safe side, I would also change all my passwords.

This infection appears to have been cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it's impossible to be 100% sure that any machine is clean.

Log looks good :D

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

  • WOT , Web of Trust, As 'Googling' is such an integral part of internet life, this free browser add on warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. It is especially helpful when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
    Green to go
    Yellow for caution
    Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and IE.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site
until there are no more critical updates.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would suggest you read:
PC Safety and Security–What Do I Need?.
How to Prevent Malware:
I would have only added Intuit and possibly McAfee when I had it.

Can I safely remove everything in the trusted zone now and only add to it if I need it later on?

Another question, should I be running MALWAREBYTES frequently? If so, is it safe to just remove the virus's through that software or should I always seek help when something is found?

I am moving forward with the cleanup.

Thank you again! You are a lifesaver! :woot:

ADDED NOTE:

When I checked my trusted sites in IE, I found the following entries only:

about:internet
http://*.mcafee.com
https://*.mcafee.com
intuit (I cannot put the full url in without it creating a link on your site. Didn't want to do that)

require server verifications (https://) for all sites in this zone flag is on.

This looks very different from what is shown in the log, no?

I believe those all belong to Mcafee

You can remove all of those listed in Trusted

I only keep MS Updates in my trusted zones.

Remove anything bad it finds.
Thank you so much for all you do! ADDED: I cannot delete McAfee from the trusted zones. Any idea how to force it?
I think I edited my post as you responded so I'll ask this again: ADDED: I cannot delete McAfee from the trusted zones. Any idea how to force it? Thanks in advance.
If Mcafee is listed in add/remove, then remove from there, if not listed:

Click Start > Run and Copy/Paste these commands hitting enter after each one:

sc stop myAgtSvc Hit enter.

sc delete myAgtSvc Hit enter.

Delete this file
c:\program files\McAfee\Managed VirusScan\Agent\myAgtSvc.exe

Delete this folder
c:\program files\McAfee
Did all the steps. Even rebooted. Rechecked to make sure the folder was deleted - it's gone. The McAfee url's still show up in trusted sites. When I highlight them and try to delete, nothing happens.
